The 2022-23 regular season for the broadcast networks is pretty much done at this point. There are a few shows still airing new episodes, but those will not have much impact on the overall rankings at this point. Only one genre entry ended the season in the Top 30 as Ghosts (CBS) improved from the last set of rankings, moving from Number 19 to Number 15. Not surprisingly, that show was renewed for a third season.
Next on the list is NBC’s La Brea which was at Number 68, up from Number 72 where it was in April. That show has been renewed for a third season, but that will likely be its last. Quantum Leap improved to slots Number 76 and it got a second-season renewal, though mostly on the strength of its digital viewing. That show could be vulnerable, though, if the writers’ strike carries on too long.
ABC’s Not Dead Yet ended at Number 83 which was even with where it was in the last set of rankings. It got renewed, but it is another one that could be on the chopping block if the strike lingers. FOX’s Fantasy Island ended at Number 121 (down from Number 113) and it was cancelled after two seasons.
Below are the Top 30 broadcast network shows (plus the other genre entries) for non-repeat, non-special, and non-sports programming based on ratings results through May 28th. The comparisons are against ratings averages for other shows in the same category (drama, comedy, reality, etc.) on the same network and also against the overall average for the network. Superman & Lois ended as the top genre entry on The CW in the Number 2 slot, but that may not be enough to get it to a fourth season on that network. That show is expensive to produce and does not fit into the lower-cost model that the new owners are shifting to. But there is a chance that it could move to Max (previously HBO Max) and continue for another season or so.
Gotham Knights is the other CW entry awaiting word on its fate, and that one is at the Number 8 slot for that network’s shows. It is just below The Winchesters which was already cancelled, but word is that GK is a cost-friendly show and CW execs are considering keeping it around for a second season.
The Flash ended at the Number 5 slot, and that one was in its final season. Cancelled shows Stargirl and Kung Fu are at Number 11 and 12 respectively. And Riverdale is further down at Number 18 as it airs out its final season. Nancy Drew just started and is not included in these rankings.
