Attempts to Shop Around Vampire Academy Have Proven Unsuccessful

Peacock announced the cancellation of its supernatural drama Vampire Academy in January of this year, but the showrunner and the studio immediately started shopping it around to other venues. Those efforts have not generated enough interest, though, and co-showrunner Marguerite MacIntyre has indicated that it is unlikely a second season will happen:

I don’t have good news. I don’t see any avenue forward. I feel like now is the time to say I’m sorry about that, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. We went a little silent because there wasn’t a lot we could say. We pitched our hearts out, and we tried, and we took it as far as we could.

There were no viewing stats available when the show was first streaming because Nielsen was not tracking Peacock at that point, but apparently the show did not develop much of an audience. Susan Rovner, who is Chairman of Entertainment Content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, admitted that the service had not done enough to develop a young adult audience by the time the series premiered in Summer 2022:

It was too soon to put those shows up on the platform.  I think what we realized is we have to get the parents before we get the teens. And I’m really hoping that once we get the parents with shows like Poker Face and shows like Traitors, that we will be able to do a show like Vampire Academy a few years from now. Unfortunately, the timing really wasn’t right and we didn’t have the scale yet to support bringing in a young adult audience for that show.

A Call to Action from fans on the social networks could still drum up some interest in the show (starting with a vote for it in our season-end poll). If a campaign push were to go viral, perhaps another venue would consider picking up Vampire Academy for a second season. But beyond that, it does not appear that there will be any further efforts to shop it around.

  1. a possible Vampire Academy movie re-adaptation down the road to pretend both the 2014 movie and the TV series never happened and to stay true to the books, hoping to avoid the 2014 movie mistakes.
