Cancellation Watch: Star Trek: Picard, Shadow and Bone Enter the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, Gotham Knights Slips, and More

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Nielsen Streaming Rankings

Star Trek: Picard entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for originals the week of March 13th to 19th.  Nielsen has started tracking Paramount+ now (apparently they added the streamer about a month ago) and the show made it into the Rankings for the fifth week of its third and final season. It was at the Number 9 slot with an estimated 310 million minutes of viewing. Netflix’s Shadow and Bone landed at Number 2 for its premiere week and had an impressive 1.1 billion minutes of viewing. That show has also been performing relatively well on the Netflix charts and appears to be on track for a third-season renewal (though nothing is guaranteed with that streamer, more on that below). Disney+’s The Mandalorian improved to Number 3 and pulled in 1.1 billion minutes of viewing as a fourth season looks very likely for that one.

In the Top 10 for acquired shows, The Last of Us slipped one slot to Number 2 for its run on HBO Max and pulled in 817 million minutes of viewing. That was the week after its Season 1 finale. And Supernatural made a return appearance on the charts for its encore run on Netflix, landing at the Number 7 slot with 649 million minutes viewed. Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the streaming charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

On Tuesday last week, The CW’s Gotham Knight took a tumble as its rating for same-day viewing in the 18-49 demographic dropped 50% from the prior week to a 0.05 score with 383K total viewers. It is unclear if that is just a blip, maybe caused by competition from basketball, but its lead-in Superman & Lois only dropped slightly to a 0.10 rating with 649K total viewers. Gotham Knights was on shaky ground before the season started because of the changes at the network, and if the ratings drop off (it had been performing above expectations) it could be doomed.

On Monday, FOX’s Fantasy Island returned after several weeks off and only managed a 0.14 rating with 1.5 million total viewers. That is one of the lowest-rated shows on that network and it is currently On the Bubble.

Over on Syfy on Wednesday, The Ark slipped just a bit to a 0.06 rating with 437K total viewers, but that one just received a second-season renewal. ABC’s Not Dead Yet dropped to a 0.26 rating with two million total viewers as that one remains On the Bubble.

Netflix Top 10

Things were slow with genre entries at Netflix for the week of April 3rd to 9th with only one show in the charts. Shadow and Bone Season 2 slipped to the Number 6 slot with 17.4 million hours viewed. That was its fourth week in the charts and it may need to hang on a few more weeks to assure a third-season renewal because . . . Netflix. Wednesday dropped out again, but that one has logged eighteen weeks in the Top 10 for its first season. Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the Netflix charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):
