The Rig Has Been Renewed for a Second Season by Amazon

Amazon’s eco-thriller The Rig will be returning for a second season on the Prime Video streaming service. That Scottish-made series premiered on January 6th with little in the way of promotion in the States, but apparently it managed to pull in enough viewership to justify a second season. It has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, but may have been directed more toward the streamer’s audience in the UK. It is not a mega-dollar production along the same lines as Amazon’s The Boys or The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, so the streamer’s execs are certainly not expecting it to pull viewership numbers anywhere close to what those two are seeing. There were already rumors that the show was getting a renewal, and now Amazon has confirmed that. Series creator David Macpherson has this to say about his plans for the second season of the show:

In series two, I’m looking forward to expanding the world of our show through the eyes of our excellent cast, as we deliver more shocks and thrills and delve deeper into both our characters’ and our show’s expanding original mythology.

The second season will likely consist of six episodes like the first and could arrive early in 2024. You can read my review of the series at this link.

This renewal brings the Cancellation/Renewal score for the current season to 24 renewed shows (35% of shows tracked) vs. 26 cancelled/ending (38%). That is the closest the two numbers have been to even since I started tracking this in January. You can see the detailed list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

The Rig follows the crew of the oil rig Kinloch Bravo which is located deep in the North Sea. Communication is cut off from the mainland and a strange cloud envelops the offshore platform. Some of the crewmembers start manifesting strange behavior and dangerous tremors start to affect the rig leading the rest of the crew on a struggle for survival as a mysterious presence threatens them and the world beyond. It stars Iain Glen, Emily Hampshire, Martin Compston, Mark Bonnar, and Owen Teale.

  1. Very decent show… never felt bored for a second. (Though there were two or three moments of climate change exposition that were really cringe & felt out of place.) The science is pseudo, of course, but if you ignore that and accept it’s fantasy, not science-fiction, it’s A-OK.
