Syfy Has Officially Cancelled Astrid & Lilly Save the World After One Season

Syfy has finally announced the official cancellation of its horror dramedy Astrid & Lilly Save the World, but if you have been reading this site you already knew that it was done. The show debuted one year ago in January 2022 and averaged only a 0.04 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic. It regularly lost over half of the lead-in audience from Resident Alien even though it received good marks from critics and viewers (currently holding a 73% Fresh Rating and 92% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes). The show is an acquisition, and Syfy only makes money on it from advertising revenue which is heavily driven by the same-day ratings. It has developed somewhat of a cult following, but the show never pulled in much of an audience in part because it did not receive much promotion from its own network.

There was no word the show’s fate after it wrapped up its first season and I went on the assumption that it was cancelled when it was not included in the network’s 2022-23 schedule. It has become increasingly more common for networks to go silent on the status of poorly performing shows, likely hoping that nobody notices they are quitely cancelling them amidst all of the other scripted originals that are vying for the attention of viewers. Syfy’s Day of the Dead is another show from last season that appears to be cancelled seeing as also pulled low ratings and was left off the schedule for the current year. (You can read more about that one and other shows with a similar fate at this link.)

Fans have made some attempts to save the show, but they have not garnered much attention at this point. Astrid & Lilly actually would be a good candidate to move to a different venue because it is not owned by Syfy’s parent company NBCUniversal and it is not a super-expensive production. And the fact that the network has now officially announced the cancellation may have been the first step in freeing up the rights to the show. If fans can stage a Call to Action and get some momentum behind their efforts, there is a chance that a second season could happen at some point.

Astrid & Lilly Save the World follows two teenage girls who are less-than-popular at their school and who accidentally release monsters from another dimension when casting a spell they do not understand. They are then tasked with becoming monster hunters in order to save humanity. It stars Jana Morrison, Samantha Aucoin, Olivier Renaud, Geri Hall, and Julia Doyle.
