Netflix Cancels The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself After One Season

Another day, another cancellation by Netflix. The latest genre entry to get cut down with the “Off With Their Heads!” verdict from the Netflix Red Queen is the fantasy drama The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. Series creator Joe Barton announced the cancellation on Twitter, and this has not been picked up widely by the mainstream entertainment media yet:

The series–which is alternatively referred to as Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself–arrived on the streamer in October 2022 with almost no promotion, but it did manage to creep into the charts for two weeks after its premiere. It topped out at Number 7 with 31 million hours watched in its second week which is not bad for a show that had little in the way of name recognition and almost no marketing push. It did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, though the show did receive good marks from critics and viewers with a 93% Fresh Rating and 92% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. The cancellation is breaking news and there is no word yet on whether the show will be shopped around, but Netflix likely retains the rights for a minimum of two years. Fans should make a Call to Action on the social networks to bring attention to the show in case there are efforts to find it a new home. You can also vote for it in our Fall 2022 Save My Show poll.

The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself follows a young man who is the bastard son of a notorious witch who was responsible for a terrible massacre. He tries to find his place in the world and deal with his powers while caught between two warring clans. It stars Jay Lycurgo, Nadia Parkes, Emilien Vekemans, Isobel Jesper Jones, Karen Connell, and Paul Ready and it is based on the YA novel Half Bad by Sally Green.
