Carnival Row Will End After Two Seasons on Amazon Prime Video

Amazon’s dark fantasy series Carnival Row will be coming to an end with its upcoming second season. The news does not come as a huge surprise and I previously indicated that this show would likely not last beyond its second season. It was renewed for a second season prior to its first-year premiere, but that was all the way back in 2019. After the first season aired, production was shut down due to COVID restrictions and it took a while before filming resumed again. Even after filming for the second season was completed (in September 2021), the show spent a very long time in post-production and the contracts for the cast and crew expired during that time. Word is that the viewership for Season 1 was good (though the Nielsen Streaming Rankings were not in place when it was released), but apparently Amazon execs did not feel strongly enough about the show to keep it going into a third year. Carnival Row was expensive to produce and it came from Amazon studios, so it is unlikely that another venue would be able to pick it up seeing as the rights are likely held by Amazon. The long-delayed second season will have its premiere February 17th and will consist of ten episodes.

Carnival Row takes place in a fantasy world modeled on the Victorian era. Many fantasy creatures have fled from their homelands due to war, but they are met with bigotry and hatred in a city dominated by humans. It stars Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne, Simon McBurney, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, and Indira Varma.
