Stargirl Cancelled After Three Seasons, All of The CW’s Shows Are on Notice

Another CW show is biting the dust as the network has announced that Stargirl has been cancelled after three seasons. This clearly suggests a culling of the herd of veteran CW entries as the network shifts direction under new ownership, something that started last season with the cancellations of Legends of Tomorrow, Legacies, Charmed, Batwoman, and more. Stargirl has been one of the higher-rated shows on the network and it was at Number 3 among Fall CW shows when I compiled the Scorecard a couple of weeks ago. Its numbers are down year-over-year, but that is pretty much true across the board for the broadcast networks this season. Apparently, the creative team had already been warned that the show could end with its third season, and they made efforts to wrap up as many storylines as possible. Series creator Geoff Johns had the following to say about the show ending:

Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons. With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure. The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations. I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built.

The Flash, Nancy Drew, and Riverdale will be ending this season as well, and it is not impossible that Kung Fu, The Winchesters, Superman & Lois, and the upcoming Gotham Knights could follow them out the door. New owner Nextar Media Group is targeting an older audience and plans on filling the schedule with inexpensive unscripted and acquired programming with more of a “wholesome” bent. So pretty much all of The CW genre entries are not a good fit for the new direction, and I consider none of them safe at this point. I would have thought that Stargirl could have made the jump to HBO Max because that is where prior seasons are streaming, but there is no indication that will be considered. That streamer has been going through shakeups of its own, and there may be a reluctance to make any additions to the scripted lineup for now. Whether fans will lobby for a fourth season of Stargirl by making a Call to Action on the social networks remains to be seen. The series finale will air on December 7th.

Stargirl follows a teen-aged girl who discovers that her father was Starman and who takes up his mantle while also pulling together a team of heroes to continue the legacy of the Justice Society. It stars Brec Bassinger, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, and Luke Wilson and it is based on the DC comics created by Geoff Johns.

  1. I liked StarGirl – it had a nice wholesome throwback appeal without the overbearing wokeism of most of the other CW entries. Unfortunately I think the current season hasn’t been all that great so far.

Also as far as I’ve heard series finale will be November 16th and not December 7th.
