Cancellation Watch: A Second Season of Tales of the Walking Dead Is Uncertain, Little Demon Rebounds, and More

As I mentioned in the Friday Digital Ratings post, now that the regular season has started I will be breaking out the streaming ratings and the linear ratings into two separate coulmns.  The latter will come out on Fridays, and on Tuesdays I will be posting the rundown of the Nielsen ratings from the past week (sometimes Wednesdays when there are delays due to a holiday) as well as status updates.

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

On Sunday, AMC’s Tales of the Walking Dead wrapped up its first season with a 0.10 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 378K total viewers.  That matches its season high, but those are still pretty low numbers for an entry in the network’s flagship franchise.  See the Status Updates below for more on this show’s chances at a second season.

Over on HBO, House of the Dragon ticked up to a 0.42 rating in the demo with 1.8 million total viewers.  That show has already been renewed for a second season.  The numbers for Rick & Morty were running late the last couple of weeks but came in on time for this post.  The show had a 0.30 rating on Sunday with 552K total viewers and appears to be on track for a seventh season renewal.

On Thursday, Adult Swim’s Primal improved to a 0.14 rating with 280K total for its season finale.  There has been no word yet on a third season of that show (more on that in the Status Updates).  Over on FXX, Little Demon rebounded to a 0.08 rating with 166K total viewers and could be back on track for a second season.

On Wednesday, Stargirl held at a 0.08 rating with 505K total viewers. The numbers for that one have been down in its third season, and its status is uncertain with new owners taking control of the network shortly.  Over on Syfy, Resident Alien slipped to a 0.06 rating with 574K total viewers, but it has already been renewed for a third season.

Status Updates:

The Sandman (Netflix, Renewal Possible): This show has been topping both the Nielsen and the Netflix rankings and pulling in millions of hours of viewing, but there has been no word on a second season yet.  Neil Gaiman has said that Netflix is taking its time to make a decision in order to gauge interest over a full month because the show is so expensive to produce.  Fans have started to put pressure on the streamer by getting #RenewSandman trending on Twitter, so perhaps an announcement will come soon.

Avenue 5 (HBO, On the Bubble): This sci fi comedy barely registered in the ratings in its first season and then disappeared for over a year and a half due to COVID-related production delays.  It is set to return for its second season on October 10th, but due to the gap between seasons the contracts for the actors and crew have expired.  Unless the show suddenly finds an audience when it returns, it will likely not be continuing on for a third season.

Primal (Adult Swim, Renewal Possible): SPOILERS AHEAD! This show wrapped up its second season with a major a character death which definitely puts the future of the series in doubt.  But Genndy Tartakovsky has indicated that he has more ideas for the show with new characters and storylines.  The viewership has been decent for this one so far, so it is possible that it could be back for a third year.

Tales of the Walking Dead (AMC, Renewal Possible): This anthology just wrapped up its first season which has received mixed reviews and low ratings.  In fact, this is the lowest-rated TWD entry so far.  It seems unlikely that AMC would up and cancel one of the spin-offs from its flagship franchise, especially considering its anthology nature and the fact that it can reinvent itself on a regular basis. I still consider a second season to be a possibility at this point, but network execs will think long and hard after this one failed to find much of an audience in its first season.
