Cancellation Watch: Stranger Things Retakes Number 1 Spot, Legacies Enters the Top 10, and More

Nielsen Streaming Top 10

After getting bumped from the top spot in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals, Netflix’s Stranger Things retook Number 1 for the week of June 27th to July 3rd.  That was when the final two episodes of Season 4 were released and that bumped its viewership up to an estimated 5.9 billion minutes.  That show will be returning next year for a fifth and final season.  The Umbrella Academy slipped to Number 2 with 2.2 billion minutes viewed in the second week of its third season and it appears to be on target for a fourth-year renewal.  Amazon’s The Boys held at the Number 4 slot with 951 million minutes viewed and it has already been renewed for a fourth season.  The Obi-Wan Kenobi mini-series slipped out of the chart the week after it wrapped up its run.  Hulu’s The Orville, Apple TV+’s For All Mankind, and the encore run of Westworld on HBO Max still did not break into the Top 10 even though all shows released new episodes that week.

In the Top 10 for acquired shows, Legacies placed at Number 4 with 596 million minutes viewed the week that its fourth season became available on Netflix.  Fans are currently fighting to save that show, and if they can get it to top the list like Manifest did, perhaps Netflix or The CW will consider greenlighting a fifth season.  Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the streaming charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Netflix Top 10:

Stranger Things Season 4 got bumped out of the Number 1 slot in the Netflix Top 10 for English Language shows for the week of July 11th to 17th by non-genre entry Virgin RiverResident Evil slipped to Number 3 with 73 million hours viewed, but could be on track for a second season renewal.  The second season of Manifest joined the first in the Top 10 (the show now counts as a Netflix original since the streamer saved it from cancellation).  Apparently interest in that show is high right now as the fourth season is scheduled to arrive this Fall.  The Umbrella Academy Season 3 slipped to Number 10 with 18 million hours viewed in its fourth week.  Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the Netflix charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

On Sunday, Westworld ticked down to a 0.06 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 394K total viewers.  That show is also getting encore runs on HBO Max, but it has not placed in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 yet.  I expect that the network will give this high-profile entry at least one more season to wrap up its storylines, but that may be it seeing as viewership has declined notably.

Last Wednesday, FX’s What We Do in the Shadows improved to a 0.11 rating with 339K total viewers.  That show is also likely pulling in notable digital viewing with its encore runs on HBO Max and it has been renewed through its sixth season.
