Cancellation Watch: The Umbrella Academy Bumps Stranger Things from No. 1, Resident Evil Debuts in Netflix Top 10, and More

Nielsen Streaming Top 10

Stranger Things got kicked from the Number 1 spot in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals for the week of June 20th to 26th as Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy took the lead in the chart.  The series had its third season debut that week and tallied up an estimated 2.5 billion minutes of viewing.  Surprisingly, a fourth season renewal for that show was not announced at Comic-Con, but I still expect it to happen.  Stranger Things was not far behind in the charts at the Number 2 slot with 2.3 billion minutes of viewing. Improving to Number 3 that week was Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi which had 860 million minutes watched.  And Amazon’s The Boys dropped to Number 4 with 712 million minutes of viewing.  HBO’s Westworld began streaming its fourth season on HBO Max at the end of the week, but it did not make it into the chart.  Netfix’s First Kill fell out of the Top 10 after two weeks and Hulu’s The Orville along with Apple TV+’s For All Mankind have not made it into the Top 10 for their third seasons so far.  Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the streaming charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Netflix Top 10:

Stranger Things Season 4 remained at the top spot in the Netflix Top 10 for English Language shows for the week of July 11th to 17th, but it did have a challenger.  The live-action Resident Evil series had its debut that week and took the Number 2 slot with 73 million hours viewed.  Even though that one has not received good buzz from critics and viewers, it could be on target for a second season renewal.  Manifest Season 1 continued to rise in the charts, placing at Number 3 for the week with 38 million hours watched.  A premiere date for the fourth season has not been announced yet.  Stranger Things Seasons 1 to 3 took up the next three slots followed by The Umbrella Academy Season 3 at Number 7.  The animated sci fi comedy Farzar had its debut that week but did not make it into the Top 10.  Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the Netflix charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

English Language Shows
1 (1) Stranger Things: Season 4 102.3 Million Hours
2 (n/a) Resident Evil 72.7 Million Hours
3 (6) Manifest: Season 1 38.2 Million Hours
4 (2) Stranger Things: Season 1 33.8 Million Hours
5 (4) Stranger Things: Season 2 33.1 Million Hours
6 (5) Stranger Things: Season 3 31.5 Million Hours

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

The animated series Primal had its Season 2 debut on Thursday last week at midnight and it had a 0.10 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demo with 180K total viewers.  That is down by almost 50% from its first season average, but this one will also be streaming next day on HBO Max and should pick up some of the slack there.

On Tuesday, FX’s What We Do in the Shadows took a notable drop from its Season 4 premiere, slipping to a 0.07 rating in the demo for the 18-49 demographic with 234K total viewers.  I am going to guess that it will make up slack with digital viewing on HBO Max, and the show has already been renewed through its sixth season.

On Sunday, Westworld improved to a 0.07 rating with 384K total viewers.  As mentioned above, it has not shown up in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings yet for its HBO Max viewing, but perhaps after a full week is available it will make an appearance.
