Cancellation Watch: Moon Knight Hits the Nielsen Top 10, Russian Doll S2 Fails to Chart, and More

Nielsen Streaming Top 10

A new MCU series made it into the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals for the week for March 28th to April 3rd.  Moon Knight had its premiere that week and bowed on the charts at Number 5 with an estimated 418 million minutes of viewing.  That is lower than Loki which premiered with 731 million minutes viewed (and eventually topped out at over a billion) and the Hawkeye premiere which had 853 million minutes (though that was for two eps), but not bad for a character that is not well known to the wider audience.  Moon Knight has been pegged by Disney+ as a mini-series meaning that there are no immediate plans to continue the show for a second season.  Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the streaming charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Netflix Top 10

Russian Doll had its second season premiere the week of April 18th to 24th but did not place in the Netflix Top 10 for English Language shows.  That is definitely not a good sign for the show returning for a third year, especially when the streamer is cancelling shows like Raising Dion that spent multiple weeks in the Top 10.  Also not placing in the chart was the second season of the animated series Pacific Rim: The Black.  That was announced in advance as its final season, so a third year was not on the table for that show.

Two genre entries debuted in the Non-English language charts that week led by the Turkish apocalyptic series Yakamoz S-245.  That one premiered at Number 3 with 22.1 million hours viewed.  Happiness, an apocalyptic series from South Korea, also debuted in the charts that week, placing at Number 8 with 10.8 million hours viewed.  Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the Netflix charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

Showtime’s The Man Who Fell to Earth barely made it into the Cable Top 150 on Sunday night as it pulled only a 0.02 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 127K total viewers.  I have moved that show to Bubble status and fans need to start making some noise on the social networks to bring attention to the show.  On Starz on Sunday, Outlander improved to a 0.04 rating with 441K total viewers for its season finale, but those are still pretty low numbers.  It has been renewed for a seventh year, but that could be its last.

Superman & Lois returned with its first new episode in several weeks and posted a 0.18 rating with 831K total viewers, the best numbers it has seen since Fall.  That did not help Naomi in the lead-out hour, though, and it remained low at a 0.06 with 452K total viewers.  The former series has already been renewed and the latter has been moved to Bubble status after the last week’s cancellations of Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman.

Two other CW shows that have not been renewed yet had less than stellar ratings last week.  On Thursday, Legacies managed just a 0.05 rating with 288K total viewers, and on Friday Charmed had a 0.06 score with 327K total viewers.  I am still thinking both of those will get renewed for at least one more season to get them to a syndication-friendly count of episodes.
