Status Updates: Y The Last Man Will Not Move to a New Venue, a Second Season of Peacemaker May Take a While, and More

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, upcoming, and recently cancelled/ended shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Y: The Last Man (Hulu)

(Completed 1st Season, Cancelled): This post-apocalyptic drama was cancelled by Hulu in Fall, in part due to the many behind the scenes troubles it experienced (more on that at this link).  But the studio did shop the series around with showrunner Eliza Clark lobbying for it to continue for a second season.  In a recent tweet, though, Clark indicated that nothing came of that and that it is likely this one is done at one season:

We tried really hard to get another platform to pick up season 2 of Y. But sadly, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. It is always incredibly difficult to move a show, and in recent years, it has only gotten harder.

Fans may want to try to make some noise on the social networks, but the prospects for a second season are very low.

Peacemaker (HBO Max)

(Streaming 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This new DC series just debuted on HBO Max and has received some good buzz so far with talks already in place for a second season.  Both creator James Gunn and star John Cena have indicated that they want to continue the show, but Gunn mentioned in a recent interview that he needs to take a break first after completing the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3 movie.  At this point, it looks like a second season of Peacemaker is a pretty good bet, though it may take a while to get to the small screen.

Hawkeye (Disney+)

(Completed 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This show wrapped up its first season in December, and a spin-off based on the Echo character (plated by Aluqua Cox) is in the works.  There is no word at this point on whether a second season of Hawkeye will follow, but consider it a possibility at some point.  This one was designed more as a mini-series like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but a second season could still happen depending on how it fits into the ongoing development plans of the MCU.

Ghosts (CBS)

(Airing 1st Season, Renewal Likely): The ratings for this show have improved since returning from its Winter hiatus, and it was already performing well in Fall.  CBS gave this one a full season pickup, and based on its current viewership trajectory it appears to be on track for a second season renewal.  Since the networks are already starting to prep their schedules for Fall 2022, an announcement could come at any time.

Day of the Dead (Syfy)

(Completed 1st Season, On the Bubble): This show wrapped up its first season quietly in December and there has been no word on it since.  It did not receive much in the way of promotion from the network and the ratings were pretty low even for a basic cable entry.  Syfy does not have an ownership stake in the show, and it only makes money from the advertising which is driven by the same-day viewership.  This one may have international funding keeping it afloat, but the longer Syfy is silent on its status, the less likely it will return for a second season.

MODOK (Hulu)

(Completed 1st Season, On the Bubble): There is still no word on a second season of this show, which is not a good sign.  It was one of the projects that was orphaned when Marvel Television came under Marvel Studios and may have been pushed too far off the radar.  Fellow Marvel Television cast-off Helstrom was cancelled pretty quickly, and Hit Monkey did not draw too much attention when it premiered in Fall 2021.  There have been talks of continuing both MODOK and Hit Monkey, but it does not appear that anything is moving forward at this point.
