Status Updates: Wheel of Time Showrunner Wants Eight Seasons, Final Space is Done, and More

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, upcoming, and recently cancelled/ended shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

The Wheel of Time (Prime Video)

(Upcoming, Renewed for 2nd Season): This show is set to premiere on November 19th, releasing its first three episodes and then one per week after that.  It has already been renewed for a second year in advance of its premiere, and its showrunner has indicated that it he envisions the series running for around eight seasons.  Amazon tends to cap off its originals around the third or fourth year, so that could be a stretch.  But if the show proves popular and if they roll out each season as an event, perhaps it could go longer.

Final Space (Adult Swim)

(Completed 3rd Season, Cancelled): This animated fan-favorite was apparently quietly cancelled in September 2021. According to series creator Olan Rogers, the multiple mergers WarnerMedia has been going through resulted in this show getting kicked to the curb. All three seasons are currently streaming on Netflix, and fans are lobbying for the show to continue to a fourth year, so perhaps it is not done yet.

4400 (CW)

(Airing 1st Season, Renewal Possible): The numbers have dropped for this show since its premiere, but it continues to do well for The CW and it is currently performing above the network average for non-repeat and non-special programming. The CW tends to issue a blanket renewal for its Fall shows around January or February which means that this one has a good chance of continuing into a second season.

Arcane (Netflix)

(Streaming 1st Season, Renewal Possible): It is getting harder to assess the status of new Netflix shows because that streamer has been in cancelling mode of late. Arcane is based on the League of Legends game and you would think that might keep the series viable. But another game-related animated series, Dragon’s Dogma, was one-and-done on Netflix, so it is hard to determine if Arcane will follow the same path. For now, though, I would say it at least has a chance at a second season.

Legends of Tomorrow (CW)

(Airing 7th Season, Renewal Likely): The same-day ratings for this show remain low (among the lowest of the Arrow-verse entries), but it definitely makes up slack with digital viewing. The CW tends to make a final season announcement for shows that have lasted three seasons or more, and LoT has not received that yet. Expect at least an eighth season from this one, and possibly more if the network wants to continue to cycle Arrow-verse characters from prior shows into this team-up series.

Supergirl (CW)

(Completed 6th Season, Ended): This show had a decent run and its sixth season was announced in advance as its last giving it the chance to wrap up its storylines. But the characters will almost certainly return at some point in other Arrow-verse shows. A Justice League series was teased at the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths, but that may just be for crossover events (a JL series was also teased towards the end of Smallville‘s run but never happened). And Legends of Tomorrow is always looking for new members, so some characters could head that show. So expect Supergirl‘s legacy to continue as long as the Arrow-verse shows remain viable.
