Renewal Announcement:

Coming as no surprise, Paramount+ has announced that its animated series Star Trek: Prodigy will be returning for a second season.  That show debuted October 28th and has pulled strong viewership across its first two episodes according to Deadline (Paramount+ does not share its viewership numbers and it is not tracked in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10).  The streamer has gone all-in on the Trek franchise and this is the fourth original series it has released following Star Trek: Discovery, Lower Decks, and Picard.  Also in the works is the Captain Pike series Strange New Worlds and a potential Section 31 show as well.  Prodigy expands the franchise to younger viewers while also linking to the Trek universe with Kate Mulgrew reprising her role from Voyager as Captain Janeway.  The second season will consist of ten episodes and will be released in 2022.  The first season will go on hiatus after November 18th and will resumes new episodes in January.

Ratings Results of Interest:

On Friday, Syfy’s Day of the Dead rebounded from last week’s 0.03 score and pulled a 0.09 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 272K total viewers.  That’s not enough to get it off Bubble status, but may keep it from getting bumped out of Prime Time which I was thinking might happen if its numbers remained low.  Over on The CW, Nancy Drew slipped to a 0.04 rating with 298K total viewers, but it tends to perform better in digital viewing and I expect it will continue to a fourth season.  On Thursday on CBS, Ghosts slipped a bit to a 0.53 rating with 5.9 million total viewers, but it continues to perform well for a sitcom on its network.

On Sunday, Fear the Walking Dead slipped yet again, this time to a 0.15 rating with 733K total viewers. That show could wrap up this season or perhaps return for an eighth and final year (more on that at this link). The Walking Dead: World Beyond improved a tick to a 0.10 rating with 431K total viewers as it heads towards the end of its two-year run.  Doctor Who held steadily low at a 0.08 rating with 305K total viewers.  But that one is still likely to return for a fourteenth season with a new Doctor. I covered the ratings from earlier in the week in Friday’s Sci Fi TV Update post, and following are the numbers for all the sci fi and fantasy shows from last week. Ratings Source: ShowBuzzDaily

Sci Fi TV Development:

The planned prequel series to The 100 will not be going forward at The CW. A backdoor pilot aired as an episode of the show’s seventh and final season and the network had been considering adding it to the schedule before deciding to pass on project. Deadline gives the following description of the show:

Set 97 years before the events of the original series, the prequel starts with the end of the world — a nuclear apocalypse that wipes out most of Earth’s human population — and follows a band of survivors on the ground as they learn to cope in a dangerous world while fighting to create a new and better society from the ashes of what came before.

Fans may lobby for the prequel series to switch to another venue, perhaps HBO Max or Paramount+.  The CW will be moving forward with another genre entry, this one based on the Korean drama W: Two Worlds. It will be titled Angel City in the U.S. and following is the description of the project:

Angel City is the story of Jules, a promising young surgeon whose stable life is upended when she gets pulled into an alternate dimension where her father’s graphic novel, and its alluring heroine, have come to life.

This is in the early stages of development and the show will likely be considered for the network’s 2022-23 slate.
