Sci Fi TV Listings for the Week of August 9th: Premieres for What If . . . ?, Titans S3, Star Trek Lower Decks S2, and More

Weekly roundup of science fiction and fantasy shows (as well as movies/specials of note) on the Prime Time TV schedule, also including programs that may be of interest to genre fans. Air dates and times subject to change without notice.

Sci Fi/Fantasy TV Shows Premiering This Week

This week brings quite a number of premieres with two shows from the broadcast networks joining the schedule and three more from the streaming services. And there are still more shows on the way later in August

What If . . . ? (Premieres on Disney+ August 11th): Enter the multiverse of unlimited possibilities. What If… ? features fan-favorite characters, including Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, Thor and more. The first episode premieres on Wednesday and the show will release one episode per week after that.

Stargirl (Season 2 Premieres on The CW August 10th): DC’s Stargirl follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore as she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new drama reimagines DC’s Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in an unpredictable series. This show returns for its second season at 8 PM EST on Tuesday.

Titans (Season 3 Premieres on HBO Max August 12th): Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong. In season three, circumstances draw our heroes to Gotham City, where they will reunite with old friends and face new threats. The first three episodes will be available on Thursday and the show will release one episode per week after that.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (Season 2 Premieres on Paramount+ August 12th): This show focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, in 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi have to keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies. The first episode will be available on Thursday and the show will release one episode per week after that.

Schedule Notes

Also premiering this week is FOX’s reboot of Fantasy Island which will have its bow at 9 PM EST on Tuesday. And returning from hiatus is The CW’s Riverdale which resumes new episodes at 8 PM EST on Wednesday. Wrapping up this week is Star Wars: The Bad Batch with has its season final on Friday. That show has been renewed for a second season which will premiere in 2022.
