Ratings Results of Interest

On Tuesday on FOX, that network’s new AI-drama NeXt had its premiere but only managed a 0.3 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.8 million total viewers. That is not an encouraging start for the show, especially considering the fact that there is not a lot of competition from scripted shows during the week  in this pandemic-impacted season. Although it did go up against NBA finals that night. It will almost certainly have to improve its numbers in the coming weeks, otherwise this “event series” could be limited to a single-season run.

On Sunday, Fear the Walking Dead returned for its sixth seasons and saw its ratings slip to a 0.41 score in the demo with 1.6 million total viewers. Those are down from the show’s fifth season, but not by too much and those are still decent numbers for a cable series, especially on such a competitive night. My guess is that AMC is close to wrapping this one up and likely informed the creative team to approach this season as its last. But if the numbers hold around this level, it is possible the show could get one more year added on.

Also on Sunday on AMC, The Walking Dead: World Beyond slipped from its premiere episode as expected. It posted a 0.29 rating with one million total viewers, but that should be enough to keep it afloat through its planned two-season run. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal made a surprise return to the schedule on Sunday on Adult Swim and it posted a 0.18 rating with 404K total viewers. That is down from the first half of its first season (which aired last Fall), but may still be enough to earn it a second season renewal. Over on HBO, Lovecraft Country slipped to a 0.14 rating with 671K total viewers, but it should make up the slack with digital and delayed viewing.

On Thursday, The CW’s Supernatural returned for the final episodes of its final season and posted a 0.4 rating with 1.1 million total viewers. That’s up from where it was last Spring and this one should draw some attention as it wraps up its fifteen-year run. In the lead-out hour, The Outpost had a 0.1 rating with 461K total viewers for its Season 3 premiere. The network has ordered thirteen additional episodes of that show.

On Tuesday on The CW, Swamp Thing pulled a 0.2 rating with 1.1 million total viewers for the premiere of its encore run. Those are decent numbers but not spectacular, and it will likely trend down from here. But if fans of the show continue to make noise, there is a chance the network could pick this one up for a second season.

Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

The Outpost (CW, Airing 3rd Season, Status – Renewed): The CW has ordered thirteen additional episodes of this show, though that had not been officially referred to as a fourth season. At this point, consider it a possibility that those eps are designed to wrap up the show’s storylines. More on that at this link.

Space Force (Netflix, 1st Season Ended, Status – Renewal Possible): This show has received some good buzz early on and it has a powerhouse of talent in front of and behind the cameras. It seemed like a sure thing for renewal, but there has been no word yet so perhaps Netflix is ironing out contracts with the creative talent.
