Digital Ratings: The Boys and Away Enter the Top 10

For the first time, an entry from a streaming service other than Netflix has entered the Top 10 of Nielsen’s newly established Streaming Ratings. Amazon’s The Boys entered the list for the week of August 31st to September 6th at the Number 3 slot. That show has proven quite popular for the Prime Video service and has already been renewed for a third season (with a spin-off in the works as well). Also entering the list for the week is Netflix’s mission-to-Mars series Away which landed at the Number 7 spot. There has been no renewal announcement for that one yet. Netflix’s Lucifer slipped from two weeks at the top spot, but did not drop far as it currently resides at Number 2. The encore run of Legend of Korra slipped five slots to Number 9 for the week.

When Nielsen first started the Streaming Ratings at the beginning of August, they were only monitoring Netflix, and Amazon. Disney+ and Hulu have now been added, and the live-action Mulan rounded out the Top 10 for the week. Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy dropped out of the Top 10 after four weeks on the chart.

The Nielsen Streaming Ratings rank the shows/movies on Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, and Hulu based on the number of minutes watched during the week by U.S. viewers. The numbers are extrapolated based on the Nielsen sampling of families who have meters monitoring their viewing habits. Following are the genre shows in the Top 10 for the Week of Aug 31-Sep 6 which includes the estimated minutes viewed (the prior week rank is in parenthesis).

2 (1) Lucifer (Netflix), 1.42 billion minutes
3 (n/a) The Boys (Amazon), 891 million
7 (n/a) Away (Netflix), 631 million
9 (4) The Legend of Korra (Netflix), 541 million

Dropping out from last week:

n/a (5) The Umbrella Academy (Netflix)
