Breaking News: Netflix’s The Society and I Am Not Okay With This Cancelled Due to COVID-19

In a Friday of cancellation announcements, Netflix has pulled the plug on two of its genre entries due to production complications related to COVID-19. The second season renewal for the Lord of the Flies-like The Society has been reversed and that show will not continue past its first season. And the paranormal drama I Am Not Okay With This has been cancelled after its first season. The latter series was moving forward with scripts for a second season, though it had not received an official renewal. The Society has a fairly large cast and that created problems in the new production environment that calls for more social distancing. And both shows were hampered by the budget increases that have hit the entire entertainment industry to assure that the cast and crew remain safe during filming in the current pandemic. Don’t be surprised if more cancellations follow for this same reason.

Neither of the shows were among Netflix’s more high-profile originals, but both apparently had dedicated followings. The initial tweet breaking the story sent out by Deadline has since been retweeted over eight thousand times and has nearly five thousand likes as of this writing. I would expect to see Call to Action campaigns emerge to try and save both of those shows.

Also cancelled on Friday was Showtime’s Penny Dreadful City of Angels.  More on that at this link.

The Society follows a group of teenagers who return from a trip to their small, suburban town to find that everybody else has left and that they are now cut off from the outside world. It stars Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon, Sean Berdy, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and Jacques Colimon.

I Am Not Okay With This focuses on a 17-year-old girl who discovers she has telekinetic powers and has to learn how to cope with her new abilities. It stars Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Sofia Bryant, and Kathleen Rose Perkins and is based on the comic of the same name by Charles Forsman.

Expect more announcements as the 2019-20 season comes to an end as we are still waiting for word on shows like Netflix’s Altered Carbon, AMC’s Dispatches from Elsewhere, and Hulu’s Castle Rock.
