Streaming Finds: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services including originals that are worth seeking out.
What Is It? This animated series focuses on ancient Gargoyles who have been awakened in Manhattan and who must learn how to survive in a new world. Following is the opening narration for the show:
One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night! We are Gargoyles!

The Skinny: Gargoyles arrived on afternoon television in the mid-90’s, but proved to be more than just another animated kids show. While it followed many of the tropes of animated shows at that time (and still today), it had a darker tone than some of the other shows it ran alongside and worked in ongoing story arcs across its episodes. It also had a tendency to incorporate Shakesperean story elements and delve into Scottish history (the gargoyles originated from Scotland). Interestingly, the series also acted as a reunion of sorts for Star Trek: Next Generation actors with Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes voicing regular roles and other TNG actors such as Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, and Colm Meaney all lending their voices over the series run.
Disney+ is the new streaming service from the Mouse House that launched in November of this year. It started off with the new Star Wars series The Mandalorian as well as a back-catalog of Disney-owned shows. Most of those are animated entries, but it also includes Agent Carter, The Inhumans, and Runaways (but not Agents of SHIELD yet). Monthly subscriptions start at only $6.99 and several Marvel Universe mini-series will be hitting the service next year focusing on characters such as Loki, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Vision, and more. In the meantime, the 78 episodes of Gargoyles along with the other Disney + selections should keep you busy for a while.
