Streaming Finds: Stargate SG-1, as well as Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate Universe, Are Available on Multiple Platforms

Streaming Finds: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services.

What Is It? A gateway that allowed ancient aliens to travel to Earth is discovered and Stargate Command is established to monitor activity and guard against hostiles that present a threat to the planet. Several teams are set up to travel through the gate and explore new worlds with the primary team, SG-1, consisting of Colonel Jack O’Neill, Captain Samantha Carter, scientist Daniel Jackson, and the alien Teal’c. They travel to the worlds that the ancient aliens had previously visited while also defending against threats such as the Goa-uld, the Replicators, and the Ori. The series is a continuation of the 1994 film Stargate.

Starring: Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Don S. Davis, Ben Browder, Claudia Black

The Skinny: Stargate SG-1 arrived on Showtime in 1997 and carried on the story from the 1994 film, though with a new cast.  That series lasted for ten years (five on Showtime and five on the Sci Fi Channel) and also produced two direct-to-video movies.  It also led to the spin-offs Stargate: Atlantis which lasted for five seasons and Stargate Universe which lasted two seasons.  There was also an animated spin-off–Stargate Infinity–that lasted one season but that is not considered canon.  The Stargate franchise is a fan-favorite in the sci fi community with the original series considered one of the all-time great sci fi TV shows, and plenty of accolades going to the other two live-action shows as well.  (You can read more about Stargate SG-1 at this link).

For those who have not watched any of the Stargate series, or who maybe have not seen them in quite a while, they are widely available for streaming.  Stargate Command is a streaming platform dedicated exclusively to the Stargate franchise and it has all of the live-action shows as well as the original movie and the two SG-1 followup movies.  It also has the web series Stargate Origins and other features exploring the franchise.  That service costs $20 per year for full access.  The live-action shows are also streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video (with Amazon Prime Membership) as well as Hulu with all seasons available.  The movies are available on those services as well.  And if you have an interest in checking out Stargate Infinity, that series is streaming for free on Tubi TV.  So there are plenty of opportunities to binge-watch the Stargate franchise TV shows and movies, and SG-1 along with the other live-action shows definitely hold up to repeat viewings.
