The second season takes place immediately after The Last Jedi and leads up to The Rise of Skywalker. Following is the official description for the second season:

The story picks up after a harrowing escape from the First Order, as the Colossus and all its residents find themselves lost in space, pursued by Agent Tierny and Commander Pyre. Kaz and team also face a myriad of new dangers along the way including bounty hunters, a suspicious Hutt, General Hux and Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. Status

Star Wars: Resistance will be ending with its upcoming second season. It never counted as a big hit ratings-wise in its first year, averaging only a 0.08 (eight one hundredths of a ratings point) based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic in its first season. But animated series of this ilk tend to skew to a younger audience and are also heavily dependent on their merchandising. Whether Disney would have kept it around longer if it had better viewership numbers is uncertain. Disney execs claimed that “this was a natural place to end the show with an epic finale” seeing as it leads into the upcoming feature film.
