Streaming Finds: Sapphire and Steel and More British Sci Fi Is Available on Shout Factory TV

What Is It? Sapphire and Steel are two interdimensional agents who work for an unknown group and who are tasked with protecting the time-stream.  They take on human form and seek out weak spots that threaten various points in history.

Starring: Joanna Lumley, David McCallum

The Skinny: This Doctor Who-like series debuted in Britain in 1979 and had a short run on PBS in the states in the early 80’s. As with the other time travel series, it had a limited BBC budget, but it also did not shoot for grander, more cosmic stories and and worked better within its production limitations. David McCallum (The Man from Uncle) is always an enjoyable actor to have onboard, and Joanna Lumley (The New Avengers) proves a good co-lead for the series. It ran for six seasons ranging from four to eight episodes, so it did not have nearly the output of classic Doctor Who. But the show did offer some good sci fi stories that verged into fantasy at times, and fans of the timelord should find plenty to like about this show.

Shout Factory TV is a DVD and digital video producer that specializes in cult television and movies and it has quite a number of shows available for streaming on its website and app, including several British sci fi entries. Also available there is the complete run of Space: 1999 (more on that at this link), The Prisoner, Secret Agent, K-9, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, and more. These shows are available for free streaming and there are plenty more gems for fans of retro sci fi. Shout Factory TV has also done several nice DVD compilations of older shows (most of those mentioned above) that are worth checking out as well.

  1. I recently found this show after watching a Joanna Lumley interview . She said it was supposed to be a kids show but turned out to be really scary and creepy . So after watching the interview I found it online and watched it . I recommend this show to everyone . If you like the old Dr who , you will love this .
