Cancellation Watch: Star Wars Resistance Will End with Its Upcoming Second Season

The animated series Star Wars: Resistance returns for its second season on October 6th, and that will be it for the show.  The recently released trailer announces Season 2 as the “epic conclusion” and Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that the show will be ending.  That site talked with a Disney rep who had the following to say about the show:

The final season of Resistance takes place during The Last Jedi and leading up to the events of The Rise of Skywalker. With the movie coming up in December, this was a natural place to end the show with an epic finale.

Star Wars: Resistance never counted as a big hit ratings-wise in its first season, averaging only a 0.08 (eight one hundredths of a ratings point) based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic in its first season. But animated series of this ilk tend to skew to a younger audience are also heavily dependent on their merchandising. Whether Disney would have kept it around longer if it had better viewership numbers is uncertain. Previous animated Star Wars series Clone Wars and Rebels lasted six seasons and four seasons respectively, though neither impacted the timeline of the currently released movies. Clone Wars will be revived for a seventh season on Disney+, so perhaps there is a chance that Resistance could return at some point as well.

Star Wars: Resistance takes place between the last major Star Wars film and the one that will be released in December 2019 and follows a young pilot for the Resistance who is sent on a secret mission to investigate the First Order which is becoming a growing threat in the galaxy. Its voice cast includes Christopher Sean, Bobby Moynihan, Suzie McGrath, Scott Lawrence, and Myrna Velasco.
