Sci Fi TV News Briefs: The 100 to End with Upcoming 7th Season, The Arrow-Verse Will Continue, and More

Sci Fi TV News Briefs: Quick hits keeping you updated on sci fi and fantasy television news.

The 100 Ends at 100: The CW’s president Mark Pedowitz announced at the TCAs this weekend that the network’s post-apocalyptic drama The 100 will be coming to an end with its upcoming seventh season. Sixteen episodes are planned for year seven and that will cap off the series at an even 100. According to Pedowitz, showrunner Jason Rothberg felt like this was the right time to wrap up the story for this long-running series. The 100 has never counted as a huge hit for The CW, but it has had a very dedicated and very vocal following. The future of the show seemed in doubt during its third season due to low ratings and fan outrage over a major character death, but The CW still renewed it for a fourth year and has continued to bring it back each year since then. The seventh season will prove to be its last, though, and that will debut in 2020.

HBO Max Updates the Greek Gods: The upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max has placed an eight-episode order for the modern take on Greek mythology Circe. The Hollywood Reporter gives the following description of the project:

Circe is told from the powerful feminist perspective of the titular goddess, who transforms from an awkward nymph to a formidable witch, able to challenge gods, titans and monsters alike.

The series will be written and executive produced by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Planet of the Apes, Jurassic World) and will likely debut at some point in 2020.

The Arrow-verse to Continue and Expand: The show that got the Arrow-verse started–Arrow–will be ending this coming season, but the other entries will be sticking around. The CW’s president Mark Pedowitz made the following statement at the TCAs: “We believe in these franchises. This universe will continue for many many years.” Arrow will come to an end around the time of the Crisis on Infinite Earths mega cross-over and I had previously thought that Legends of Tomorrow might end this coming season as well. But the statement by Pedowitz suggests that is not the case. Another Arrow-verse show could be joining the line-up in 2020, but there is no word on what that will be at this point (possibly a spin-off from Arrow). In addition, characters from Black Lightning will appear in the upcoming Crisis cross-over, but it is not clear yet if that show will be drawn into the Arrow-verse. The cross-over event will begin in December of this year and carry into 2020.

Picard Prequels: The Star Trek: Picard series is set to debut on CBS All Access in early 2020, and a prequel comic series and book will precede that to get fans warmed up for the show. In November, Image comics will kick off the three-issue mini-series Star Trek: Picard – Countdown. TrekMovie.com gives the following description for that:

This countdown event centers around a mission that would go on to change the life of beloved Star Trek captain Jean-Luc Picard – widely considered to be one of the most popular and recognizable characters in all of science fiction.

That will be followed by the Simon & Schuster Gallery Books novel The Last Best Hope in February of next year. That book will introduce several of the characters that will appear in show and lead directly into the series.
