Cancellation Watch: Amazon Renews The Expanse for a Fifth Season, Carnival Row for a Second Season, Interested in More Good Omens

This past weekend at the TCAs, Amazon announced the renewal of two of its original shows, neither of which has aired an episode on the streaming service. The Expanse, which was saved by Amazon after Syfy cancelled it, has been given a fifth year renewal with its fourth season currently set for a December 13th debut. Syfy cancelled that series after its third season, but fans staged a raucous campaign that convinced the online giant to pickup it up and add it to its Prime Video streaming service. It didn’t hurt that the company’s owner Jeff Bezos was a fan of the show. The space drama is based on the book series by James S.A. Corey which began with the 2011 novel Leviathan Wakes. The show stars Thomas Jane, Steven Strait, Cas Anvar, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, and Frankie Adams. The first three seasons are currently available for streaming on Prime Video with Amazon Prime membership.

Also getting a renewal was upcoming fantasy entry Carnival Row. That series takes place in an alternate version of Victorian England where fantasy creatures have fled from their invaded lands and now live with humans as mostly unwanted immigrants. It was created by René Echevarria (Star Trek: DS9, The 4400) and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim) and stars Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne, David Gyasi, Karla Crome, and Indira Varma. It debuts on Prime Video on August 30th.

Amazon execs also expressed interest in a second round of the apocalyptic mini-series Good Omens. Amazon’s TV co-head Vernon Sanders made the following statement during the TCAs:

We’re lucky to have an ongoing relationship with Neil” Gaiman, the series co-creator. We’re so excited about how Season 1 has done for us. The notion has come up about whether we can revisit that world. It’s in Neil’s hands now but we’d love to do it. We’re finding that it just takes a little time, perhaps, in the case of Neil. But whatever he wants to do, we’re interested in.

That series, which is based on the book of the same name by Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett, debuted on May 31st and stars Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Daniel Mays, Sian Brooke, and Anna Maxwell Martin.
