Sci Fi TV News Briefs: Netflix Teams with the Russo Brothers on Magic The Gathering, Dark Will End with its Third Season, and More

Sci Fi TV News Briefs: Quick hits keeping you updated on sci fi and fantasy television news.

Magic The Gathering Heads to Netflix: Fresh off their stint directing Avengers: Endgame, the Russo brothers will be teaming with Netflix on an animated series based on the card game Magic: The Gathering. That popular fantasy game has been around for 26 years and this will be its first adaptation beyond the gaming environment. Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels) and Jose Molina (The Tick) will be writing the series, but there are not many details on the story at this time other than it will focus on the Planeswalkers, the magic-wielding beings from the game. Expect this show to debut on the streaming service at some point in 2020.

Morena Baccarin Makes a Home Invasion: Fan-favorite actress Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Gotham, Deadpool) has signed on as the star of the upcoming sci fi comedy Home Invasion. Variety gives the following description for the series:

Home Invasion will center on a normal family made up of aliens sent to invade Earth. The series tells the story of two burglars who breaks into a house who find themselves face to face with an absurd close encounter.

The series also stars another well-known genre veteran John Noble (Fringe, Sleepy Hollow) and it is produced by the NENT group. Six episodes are planned for the first season and it will debut at some point in 2020.

Dark Is Coming to an End: Netflix’s German-language sci fi series Dark returns for its second season on June 21st. And the trailer for that which was released last week indicates that the show has three “cycles” which points to it ending after its third season. That is about the number of seasons that the streaming service prefers these days, so don’t expect that one to stick around for a fourth year.

Netflix Heads to Jurassic World: The streaming service Netflix will team with DreamWorks Animation for a new series that will be set in the Jurassic World universe titled Camp Cretaceous. The Hollywood Reporter gives the following description for the show:

The new series follows a group of six teens as they experience life at a new adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar. But when dinosaurs wreak havoc across the island, the campers wind up stranded and are forced to work together to survive.

The streamer is currently targeting 2020 for the series to make its debut.

The CW Will Tell Two-Sentence Horror Stories This Summer: The fifth-place network has added another genre entry to its Summer schedule with the horror anthology Two-Sentence Horror Stories, based on the viral fan fiction which has become popular on social media. The network gives the following description for the series:

These contemporary tales of horror and haunting tap into universal primal fears, filtered through the anxieties of the most connected and racially diverse generation. Despite dizzying advancements in technology, inequality, social progress, and environmental degradation… the things that haunt us are still the same.

Episodes run for half an hour and the series will have its two-ep premiere on August 8th. It joins The CW’s Summer line-up which also includes The 100, iZombie, The Outpost, and new series Pandora. You can see the full schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows at this link.
