Cancellation Watch Breaking News: DC Universe Has Cancelled Swamp Thing Already

The DC Universe live-action series Swamp Thing just had its debut at the end of May, but apparently it is now in burn-off mode as the streaming service made the surprising announcement today of the show’s cancellation. This one had run into some production troubles and its episode order was cut from thirteen to ten, so there were some indications that it was fighting an uphill battle early on and I did suggest in the most recent Weekly Roundup post that it might be facing an uncertain future. Also, the fate of the DCU streaming service may be in question with the AT&T buyout of Time Warner and the new WarnerMedia streaming platform in the works. According to Deadline Hollywood, WarnerMedia execs were not strong supporters of Swamp Thing and apparently decided it did not fit well with future plans.  There have been some claims that issues with promised tax rebates from state of North Carolina–where the show filmed–led to the cancellation, but that is disputed and if the studio was really committed to the show they could have tried to work out other deals.  The Titans live-action series which debuted on DCU in late 2018 has already been renewed for a second season and Doom Patrol has allegedly been given the second season nod, but there has been no official announcement on that at this point. Fans of Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol should team up on the social networks to support their shows and perhaps get another season for both.

Swamp Thing follows CDC researcher Abby Arcane who returns to her home of Louisiana in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. She works with and scientist Alec Holland who dies tragically in an accident but is then brought back to life by the swamp. It stars Crystal Reed, Virginia Madsen, Andy Bean, Derek Mears, and Henderson Wade and is based on the DC comic of the same name created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The series will continue to release one episode per week until it has completed its first season run.

There are still several shows from the regular season that are awaiting renewal or cancellation announcements, and the Summer shows have just started rolling out.
