Cancellation Watch: Agents of SHIELD Rebounds; Person of Interest Gets Renewed (as Expected) but What About Intelligence

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

Ratings Results for the Tuesday through Thursday sci fi / fantasy shows:

agents-of-shield-cancelledOn the Hot Seat: Last week, I moved ABC’s Agents of SHIELD to bubble status when that show sunk to a series low of a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic.  But with Tuesday’s episode, the series rebounded a bit pulling a 2.1 rating with six million total viewers.  That’s still on the lower end of where I’m sure the ABC exec’s would prefer, but it may be enough to keep it alive based its franchise recognition (though I still believe it will have a major shakeup if it does come back for a second season).  I’m still keeping it at bubble status for now, but if it can keep its numbers above the 2.0 level then I may bump it up a bit above that.  On Wednesday, Revolution remained low at a 1.3 rating with 4.6 million total viewers and time is running out for this one.  It’s very unlikely that the show can make much of a surge in the ratings over the rest of the season so it will have to rely on the social network activity of its fanbase to bolster its chances for a third season renewal.  But having only average a 1.4 rating this season, it seems like that is a longshot.

Other Ratings News: CBS renewed most of its Prime Time entries this week including Person of Interest.  That renewal comes as no surprise despite its drop off in the ratings this season.  The Tuesday night 10 PM EST timeslot it moved to is a tougher one, but it still regularly lands in the Top 20 based on its total viewers.  Plus, it is a third season series so it has been a pretty sure bet for renewal most of the season.  Left out of the renewal announcements was mid-season entry Intelligence which has flown low in the ratings since moving into its Monday 10 PM EST timeslot.  I have been predicting this one as likely to be cancelled and the fact that there was no mention of it in the recent slew of renewals seems to support that.

On Tuesday night, a new episode of The Originals came in low at a 0.8 rating with 1.7 million total viewers.  That’s lower than where it has been tracking, but not unexpected because The CW starts running a lot of repeats this time of year.  And speaking of which, the rest of that  network’s Tuesday through Thursday genre shows were reruns this week (as was Person of Interest on CBS).

Keep your eyes open today and in the coming weeks because cancellation announcements for shows like Intelligence, Almost Human, Star-Crossed and some of the others could come at any time.  And I’ll have the ratings numbers for last nights Once Upon A Time in Wonderland on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site later this morning as well as any other ratings numbers and breaking announcements.  You can see the current status for all this season’s genre shows at this link,  and for more information on the ratings numbers and how I determine the Cancellation Alert status of a show, see the Cancelled Sci Fi FAQ.
