Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Fear the Walking Dead Renewed for Sixth Season

Coming as no surprise, AMC’s TWD spin-off Fear the Walking Dead has been renewed for a sixth season.  The announcement was made at the TWD panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.  The show has slipped to series low levels in its fifth season, but I figured that a sixth season was still a good bet because AMC would not want to truncate part of its flagship franchise without giving it a chance to wrap up its storylines.  There is no word on whether the sixth season will be its last, but I would expect that the writers will be told to set up a possible endgame for the show.  One more season of sixteen episodes will get the show to 85 total which should be sufficient for a syndication run.  And AMC is currently working on another TWD spin-off which could continue to expand the franchise if FtWD does come to an end.  The show will have its mid-season finale this coming Sunday, but will resume new episodes shortly after that on August 11th.

Fear the Walking Dead starts up prior to the events in TWD and follows a group of survivors during the early days of the zombie-pocalypse.  It has now caught up with the parent show–before the ninth season time jump–with Morgan and Dwight crossing over and joining the spin-off.  It stars Colman Domingo, Lennie James, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Maggie Grace, Jenna Elfman, and Rubén Blades.
