Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for August 6th:
Spaceship Earth (Disney+)
An entry for this one has shown up for several weeks in the listings, and I was thinking it was referring to a documentary, but this a TV series based on the Disney World EPCOT attraction of the same name, and it has received a pilot order. Following is the description given by Deadline:
When a mission to avert an imminent global cataclysm goes awry, a small band of teenagers from Earth’s past and future must join forces to confront a threat as vast and mysterious as time itself.
Jason Fuchs (IT: Welcome To Derry) will be onboard as showrunner and Michael Waldron (Loki) will writing, with Toland Krieger (Shadow & Bone) set to direct the pilot. Its connection to the EPCOT attraction will be loose at best because that fifteen-minute ride takes guests on a time machine-themed experience, demonstrating how advancements in human communication have helped to create the future one step at a time. If this one gets a series pickup, it will likely be looking at a late 2027 or early 2028 target premiere date.
American Villain: Grodd (HBO Max)
The previously announced DC Crime series that will have Jimmy Olsen as the lead has apparently changed its name to American Villain: Grodd. I have not seen an official announcement on that, but I am seeing the show referred to under that title now, and that is how it has shown up in Production Weekly for the past couple of weeks. It will be a mockumentary where Daily Planet photographer/reporter Jimmy Olsen does a deep dive investigation of supervillains. Skyler Gisondo will be returning to the role of Olsen (previously seen in 2025’s Superman), and apparently the plan is to focus on different villains each season with Jimmy Tatro set to play Grodd in the first year. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault (American Vandal) will be writing and showrunning, and this one is likely targeting a 2027 premiere.
Wellington Paranormal Season 5 (TVNZ)
This supernatural mockumentary will be returning for a fifth season, four years after it aired its fourth season. This is a spin-off from the movie What We Do in the Shadows created by Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Paul Yates, and it is considered to be in the same universe as the television series based on that film. It follows Wellington, New Zealand, police officers Kyle Minogue and Karen O’Leary as they investigate paranormal phenomena. It originally aired in that country, and all four seasons ran on The CW in the U.S. Production has officially begun on the fifth season, which will consist of six episodes, and since this is not a big-dollar series, it could see a pretty quick turnaround and possibly premiere in early 2027. There is no word at this point on whether a venue in the U.S. will be carrying the new season, as the show is not currently airing or streaming in this country.
