Why Watch It?
This series arrived on TNT in 2014 without much fanfare, but it proved quite durable and went on for a successful five-year run. It takes an interesting twist on the post-apocalyptic tale with a naval destroyer having avoided the plague that wiped out most of humanity, giving the survivors a strong central base to work from. And it follows the crew of that ship as they travel along the coast of the United States looking for survivors and trying to re-establish some semblance of civil society.
Take note that The Last Ship is basically G.I. Joe saves the world, but it does that about as good as it can. There is no jingoism or rah-rah kick butt attitude, just soldiers doing their duty, fighting against threats they encounter and usually coming out on top. This makes for a less dark post-apocalyptic tale, but offers a nice respite from the TWD-type shows as it injects hope into its stories, and it can be quite fun when at its best. This one ran for five years and was given the opportunity to wrap up its storylines, and even though it has been mostly off the radar for sci fi fans, it is certainly worth checking out.
