Sci Fi TV News of Note:
Disney has picked up the animated series that is currently in the works based on popular fantasy children’s novels Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter. Those books follow five groups of ferrel cats split into clans–ThunderClan, WindClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, and SkyClan–who often find themselves in conflict with one another. It is being produced by Publishers Coolabi Group and Tencent Video, with A.C. Bradley (What..if?) onboard as showrunner and Rodrigo Blaas (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia) pegged as director. The series will stream on Disney+ and also air on The Disney Channel.
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for its previously announced adaptation of the Dungeon Crawler Carl books. Here is the official logline from the series:
An alien invasion has wiped out most of humanity and any survivors are forced to fight for their lives on a sadistic intergalactic game show. Sounds bad, right? Now try doing it with bare feet and a stuck-up, self-centered, tiara-wearing talking cat as your partner. Welcome to Dungeon Crawler World: Earth, where the apocalypse will be televised … and Coast Guard vet Carl finds himself stuck with his ex-girlfriend’s award-winning show cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, as they try to survive the end of the world, fighting monsters, aliens, an insane A.I. and even other survivors … all for the sake of good TV. Survival is optional. Entertainment is not.
Production on that has already begun with Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World) set to write the series, and Seth MacFarlane (The Orville) onboard as executive producer. It will probably be targeting a late 2027 or early 2028 premiere.
DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has commented that work has begun on a Gorilla Grodd HBO show, but what he is actually referring to is the previously announced Jimmy Olson series that acts as a spin-off from the current movies. Filming on that is set to start soon, and according to co-CEO James Gunn “It’s both a Jimmy Olsen AND a Gorilla Grodd show”. Look for that one to premiere late 2027 or early 2028.
In cancellation news, Netflix has decided not to pick up a second season of the Duffer Brothers executive-produced series The Boroughs. That one did wrap up its Season 1 storylines, but the creative team did have at least two more seasons planned. You can read more on the cancellation at this link.
In casting news, Manny Jacinto (The Acolyte), Emily Mortimer (Relic) and Thomasin McKenzie (Pantheon) have come aboard the third and final season of Amazon’s Fallout in undisclosed recurring roles.
In production news, work has begun on the second season of Apple TV’s supernatural dramedy Widow’s Bay according to the latest Production Weekly listings. That one should be targeting a mid to late 2027 premiere.
