Sci Fi TV Production Report: Work Begins on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 4 and Dungeon Crawler Carl

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.

Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for May 28th:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 4 (Prime Video)

There has not been an official renewal for this Lord of the Rings prequel series yet, but work on the fourth season has begun according to the latest Production Weekly listings. This show was picked up with a 50-episode commitment, so it is not surprising that production is moving forward with the fourth year. The third season is scheduled to premiere on November 11th, and with filming set to begin in early 2027 on the fourth season, this will get a jump on production so that the hiatus is not too long (there were two years between the first and second season, and it will be the same between the second and third). The upcoming season will see a time jump of several years, and it takes place at “the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will — and at last rule all Middle-earth”. The fourth season will likely be targeting a 2028 premiere.

Dungeon Crawler Carl (Peacock)

This series–based on the LitRPG books by Matt Dinniman–was announced in April, and it is now showing up in the latest Production Weekly listings. Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World) will write and executive produce the series, while Seth MacFarlane (The Orville) will be onboard as executive producer. Following is the official logline from the series:

An alien invasion has wiped out most of humanity and any survivors are forced to fight for their lives on a sadistic intergalactic game show. Sounds bad, right? Now try doing it with bare feet and a stuck-up, self-centered, tiara-wearing talking cat as your partner. Welcome to Dungeon Crawler World: Earth, where the apocalypse will be televised … and Coast Guard vet Carl finds himself stuck with his ex-girlfriend’s award-winning show cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, as they try to survive the end of the world, fighting monsters, aliens, an insane A.I. and even other survivors … all for the sake of good TV. Survival is optional. Entertainment is not.

No casting announcements have been made yet, but expect those to be coming soon. This one will likely be targeting a mid-to-late 2027 premiere.

Other genre entries from the listings for May 28th: DC Crime (HBO), From Season 5 (MGM+)
