The long-in-development Stargate revival has run into yet another snag as Amazon execs have decided to cancel plans for a new series that would have acted as a continuation of that franchise. Given the greenlight in November of 2025, the project was headed up by franchise veteran Martin Gero who had previously been a writer for Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. No specifics on the new series are available, but his plan was to create a show that existed in the same universe and would carry on with the legacy of what had been previously established. But according to Variety, “Amazon execs were concerned that Gero’s take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise’s already dedicated fanbase”. They apparently wanted a show that was more like the Nu-Trek entries on Paramount+ that brings in new viewers without relying as much on the existing audience. Of course, they seem to fail to understand that Stargate has pretty good name recognition, and a well made show could appeal to new fans while also bringing back many of the established viewers.
Amazon had been looking to reboot or revive the franchise since acquiring MGM Studios, and the creative team had spent nearly four months in the writer’s room developing the new show. According to Deadline, part of the reason that his project has been dumped is the recent regime change at Amazon MGM and the new people in charge believed the direction Gero was going “no longer aligned with Amazon’s programming strategy”. But this is still and expansive franchise, and they will likely take a shot at bringing it back at some point, though that could be a ground-up reboot instead of a revival, possibly aimed at the big screen.
Stargate got its start as a 1994 feature film that followed archaeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson (played by James Spader) and Air Force Colonel Jack O’Neil (played by Kurt Russell) as they travel through an ancient alien portal known as the Stargate, which transports them across the galaxy to a desert world ruled by the powerful being known as Ra. There they discover that many of Earth’s ancient myths and legends may have extraterrestrial origins and find themselves leading a rebellion against an oppressive regime. Stargate: SG-1 carried on from the film with Michael Shanks taking over as Jackson and Richard Dean Anderson stepping in as O’Neil, and Amanda Tapping was brought on as Captain Samantha Carter with Christopher Judge joining as the alien Teal’c. They were one of several teams that traveled through the Stargates exploring new worlds and looking for threats to Earth. The series ran for ten seasons–first on Showtime and then on The Sci Fi Chanel–and it also produced two direct-to-video movies. Stargate: Atlantis was the first spin-off series from SG-1, and it ran for five seasons. Stargate Universe followed, and it ran for two seasons before getting cancelled by Syfy. The franchise also produced the web series Stargate: Origins and the animated series Stargate: Infinity, though the latter is not considered canon with the other shows.
Fans have already started an online petition to support the revival series and that has garnered over 41K signatures as of this writing. You can add you name to the list at this link.
