Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for April 16th and April 23rd:
The Testaments Season 2 (Hulu)
There has not been an official renewal announcement for this sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, but an entry for Season 2 is showing up in the latest Production Weekly listings. We have not seen Nielsen Streaming numbers for the show yet because those run on about a one-month delay, but Deadline reports that the premiere pulled in eleven million hours of viewing over its first eight days and that the numbers have gone up since then. Hulu apparently feels strong enough about this one that they have decided to ramp up production for a second year.
The Handmaid’s Tale went for six seasons, well beyond the book it was based on, wrapping up in Spring of 2025. The creative team could carry on The Testaments for multiple seasons, continuing to explore the world of Gilead. This series takes place years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale and follows a new generation of young women coming of age under the oppressive regime of Gilead as cracks begin to form in its control. It continues the story of that world while bringing back key characters and expanding on the resistance movement working to bring Gilead down from within. It stars Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, Mabel Li, Brad Alexander, Isolde Ardies, and Ann Dowd, and it is currently releasing new episodes on Hulu.
From Season 5 (MGM+)
The fifth and final season of this show was announced last week, and production on that has now begun. This one has continued to be a strong performer for MGM+ and they will give it the opportunity to wrap up its storylines, hopefully before its long-building mystery becomes too convoluted. Creator John Griffin, showrunner Jeff Pinkner, and director Jack Bendor issued the following joint statement about the renewal:
We are wildly excited to announce that we’ve officially begun work on season 5. Which means we will get the chance to see our story to its conclusion. Which means questions will be answered. Answers will be questioned. And there will surely be a cascade of tears and terrors in-between. We are thankful for the support of our friends and partners at MGM+. And we are grateful beyond measure for the mad passion of our entire FROMily. We’re excited to share season 4 with you and hope it whets your appetite for what’s to come.
With production beginning now, that should have this one on track to premiere by Spring 2027, which is in line with its near-yearly release schedule. From unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town in middle America that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normalcy and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest – including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down. It stars Harold Perrineau, Eion Bailey, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Shaun Majumder, Avery Konrad, and Scott McCord. The fourth season is currently releasing episodes on MGM+.
Other genre entries from the listings for April 16th and April 23rd: Eternally Yours (CBS), Robocop (Amazon), Scooby Doo: Origins (Netflix), Twisted Metal (Peacock) Season 3, The X-Files (Hulu)
