Cancellation Watch: Invincible Enters the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, Hit Monkey Appears to Be Done, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

Invincible (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This animated superhero series made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its Season 4 premiere, landing at the Number 9 slot with an estimated 494 million minutes of viewing. Those are decent numbers for an animated entry, and this one has already been renewed for a fifth season, though it may wrap up around that point.

Hit Monkey (Hulu, Status: Cancelled): There has been no word on this Marvel animated series since its second season premiered almost two years ago, and at this point, it appears to be done. The showrunners did have plans for a third year and beyond, but nothing is currently in production, and it seems unlikely that it would go forward. The show did not place in the Nielsen streaming rankings during its first two seasons, and it has not developed much in the way of buzz. There is some slight hope for fans, though, as this one had a long hiatus between its first and second seasons, and I moved it to cancellation status, only for the show to make a surprise return. I am moving it to Cancelled once again, but if the fans make some noise on the social networks, maybe that third season could happen.

One Piece (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This live-action anime adaptation slipped to Number 3 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the second week of its second season, but viewership remained above one billion minutes with 1.3 billion total. It has already been renewed for a third year, and it currently stands as one of Netflix’s most-watched shows for the 2025-26 season.

War Machine (Netflix, Status: Possible Sequel): This Netlix original movie has spent seven weeks in that streamer’s Top 10 so far and definitely counts as a hit. There are plans for a sequel, but it has not been officially announced yet. If they do expand this into a franchise, don’t be surprised if a television series follows.

Outlander (Starz, Status: Ending): I am now seeing linear ratings for this show’s Season 8 premiere on USTVdb.com, and it pulled a 0.02 score based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 202K total viewers. That is down from its seventh season premiere but about in line with what we have been seeing from cable shows these days. This one will be wrapping up with its current season, and the second season of the spin-off series Outlander: Blood of My Blood is set to premiere in Fall 2026.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

Last week, it was announced the MGM+’s From has been renewed for a fifth and final season, and that Peacock’s The Copenhagen Test has been cancelled after one season. That brings the current score to 28 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (56% of shows tracked) vs. 12 cancelled and ending (24%). Note that Hit Monkey getting moved to Cancelled status counts all the way back to the 2023-24 season. Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
