Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for March 26th:
Pluribus Season 2 (Apple TV)
The first season of this Apple TV entry wrapped up in December 2025, and production on the second season–which was announced in advance–has now officially begun. Work on writing the series had already started, and creator Vince Gilligan had given several updates suggesting that was moving along slowly. He seemed to be indicating that there would be a notable delay between seasons, but the fact that the show is now appearing in the Production Weekly listings is a positive development, as this indicates they may start filming in the next few months. He has indicated that the writers are not quite certain what to do with some of the storylines from the first season, including the device that was dropped off at Carol’s house at the end of the finale. But he has said that this is not a Lost-style “mystery box” series that will layer mystery on top of mystery. Based on what we have heard from him thus far, expect this one to return mid-2027 at best.
Wonder Man Season 2 (Disney+)
The renewal for this show was announced earlier this week, and work on the second season is already beginning. That is rather impressive, seeing as this one was originally designated as a mini-series and the MCU schedule is already pretty full. It is unclear if there are any plans to bring the character into the upcoming films, and the show was previously referred to as a standalone entry with showrunner Andrew Guest saying the following:
I think Marvel’s approach to this is let each project stand on its own, and if an audience connects with it and if they connect with the character, then they can figure out how to keep using them.
Guest, along with director Destin Daniel Cretton, will be returning to the series, and it certainly set up a continuation of its story with the Season 1 finale. Expect this one to be back around mid-2027.
School Spirits Season 4 (Paramount+)
The renewal for this supernatural drama was announced this week, and it has turned into a quiet streaming success, in part due to a new model it is following. It has a secondary licensing deal with Netflix where seasons have an encore run on that service about eight months after they premiere on Paramount+, and it typically performs better there. And with production kicking off shortly after the renewal announcement, it could have only a one-year hiatus, as it did between its second and third seasons. Co-creator Megan Trinrud had the following to say about plans of the upcoming fourth season (WARNING, this contains SPOILERS for the third season):
What I find genuinely interesting is being stuck somewhere for so long and then being released into the world — only to realize how hard it is to exist in that huge space again. The world has changed. Split River as a school is a very tight little environment. What’s out there is very different, and I think it will be a real shock.
Expect this one to be back early in 2027.
Untitled Stranger Things Spin-Off (Netflix)
Stranger Things counts as one of Netflix’s most-watched originals, and the streamer is definitely looking to expand this into a franchise. An animated spin-off series is set to premiere next month, and yet another connected show is in the works as well. That was first teased back in 2025, and the Duffer brothers will be involved in developing it, but they will not be onboard as showrunners (they have signed a deal with Paramount and will be busy working for that studio). Ross Duffer had the following to say about the direction the spin-off would follow:
They’re going to live in a bit of a different world. There’s going to be connective tissue, but you’re almost anthologizing in a way. Because we’re not Star Wars. We can’t be like, ‘Oh, now we’re on this planet.
With production officially beginning on this one, expect to hear more details in the coming months.
Other genre entries from the listings for March 26th: Fallout (Prime Video) Season 3, Paradise (Hulu) Season 3
