In the third renewal/cancellation announcement over the last two days, and coming as no surprise, Apple TV has renewed its alternate history series For All Mankind for a sixth season, and it will wrap up at that point. The renewal has been assumed for some time seeing as an entry for Season 6 showed up in Production Weekly back in November 2025 (which you heard first here at CancelledSciFi.com). The fifth season is scheduled to premiere on Friday of this week, and the show has been one of Apple TV’s most-watched and most-acclaimed. It has not spent a lot of time in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, but that is common for originals from this streamer, and the show has regularly placed in the Apple TV Top 10. The creators originally had a seven-season plan for the series, which is rather ambitious for a streaming original. Now it looks like that is getting adjusted to a six-year plan, but that is still a very good run for a streaming series, and it gives the crew the opportunity to wrap up the show’s storylines. Showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi had the following to say about the renewal:
Getting to explore the For All Mankind universe over six seasons has been an amazing privilege, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to finish the story the way we’ve always hoped. We’re incredibly proud of what this series has become, and grateful to Apple TV and Sony Pictures Television for helping us see it through to its final chapter.
The typical length between seasons for this show has been one and half to two years, but since the creative team got a jump on production back in November, perhaps the next season could arrive as early as mid-2027. The spin-off series Star City is set to premiere May 29th.
This announcement brings the Cancellation/Renewal score for the 2025-26 season to 25 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (54% of shows tracked) vs. 10 cancelled and ending (22%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page. Yesterday’s announcement included the renewal for Wonder Man and the cancellation for Starfleet Academy.
For All Mankind takes place in an alternate history where Russia is the first country to land a man on the Moon. This ignites the space race as the United States and the Soviet Union pour massive resources into the exploration of space and the colonization of the Moon and other planets in the solar system. The show typically jumps ahead about a decade at the end of each season and the upcoming fifth year will kick off somewhere around 2012 in the alternate timeline. It stars Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Sarah Jones, Shantel VanSanten, Jodi Balfour, Wrenn Schmidt, Krys Marshall, Coral Peña, and Edi Gathegi.
We are approaching the Upfronts in May when the networks and streaming services announce their lineups for the upcoming season, and starting to get some announcements on the current sci fi TV entries, so I am expecting more renewal and cancellation updates over the next month or so.
