Coming as somewhat of a surprise, the MCU series Wonder Man will be continuing to a second season even though it was originally designated as a mini-series. Disney+ has elected to bring this one back to continue its story, and the same creative team will remain with the show as Destin Daniel Cretton will return as director and Andrew Guest will remain onboard as showrunner. In addition, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley will be returning in the lead roles. The show made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere, pulling in an estimated 618 million minutes of viewing. But all episodes were released that week, and it disappeared from the chart afterwards. It did get good marks from critics and viewers, currently holding a 91% Fresh Rating and 87% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Disney will be pushing it at awards time next year.
Cost may have been a factor in the renewal because while it was certainly not an inexpensive production, it likely cost less than many other MCU shows because it focused less on heroics and more on the relationship between the two lead characters. This is only the third live-action MCU series to get a second season renewal, following Loki and Daredevil: Born Again. Disney has tended to peg its TV entries in the franchise as limited series, but they certainly keep open the option to continue the shows. Wonder Man did wrap up many of its storylines in its first season, but the ending opened up a whole new chapter.
This announcement brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2025-26 season to 24 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (53% of shows tracked) vs. 10 cancelled and renewed (22%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.
Wonder Man follows Simon Williams, a struggling actor who has had superpowers he does not understand since he was young and who is chasing the role of his dreams in an upcoming superhero film. Blending Hollywood satire with superhero action, the show explores fame, identity, and the blurred line between performance and reality as Simon navigates the many pitfalls of the entertainment industry. It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Ben Kingsley, X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, and Joe Pantoliano, and it is based on the Marvel Comic series of the same name.
We are only a short time away from the Upfronts in May when the networks and streaming services announce their lineups for the upcoming season, so I am expecting more renewal and cancellation announcements over the next month or so.
