Why Watch It?
This mid-70’s space epic tried to mix Star Trek with 2001: A Space Odyssey, and ended up delivering a rather mixed-bag of a sci fi series. Coming from Gerry and Sylvia Anderson who had made a name with their Supermarionation shows like Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. and who has also produced the short-lived but well-remembered UFO, this series tried to tap into the audience that had made Star Trek a phenomenon in the syndication market in the 70’s. Playing fast-and-loose with science, Space: 1999 followed the runaway moon as it encountered new planets or alien spaceships each week.
The first season tried to deliver heady, philosophical stories while the second just went for straight action. The special effects were quite good for the time, and they are the highlight of this show. But this one is full of 70’s cheesiness, acting as a guilty pleasure as it provides some nostalgic value, especially for those of us who watched it when we were younger. It doesn’t quite count as must-watch sci fi TV, but it is worth your time to check out a few episodes, especially from the first season. (You can read more about show at Cult-SciFi.com).
Where Is It Streaming?
The entire series is available to stream for free with ads on several services. Shout!TV has had it available for quite a while, and it is also streaming on The Roku Channel and On Demand at Pluto TV. Note that it does tend to come and go from the free services, but it is typically streaming on at least one of them at any given time, and you can monitor its status at JustWatch.com. In addition, if you have a subscription to Amazon’s Prime Video, it is streaming there, and it is also available on Peacock. This one also got the Blu-ray treatment not too long ago, and it is available to purchase VOD.

I am old enough to remember Space 1999 staring Barbara Baine and Martin Landau who I believe were married at the time. In 1999 the moon gets separated from the earth and starts a journey of its own to ????? At the time there was actually a human settlement on the moon that of course was also separated from earth when the moon began its journey. It was interesting but after a few years it got repetitive as I guess they were running out of good ideas. I mean they were just in space, and they never landed on a planet so the plots were limited in scope.
