Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
Doctor Who (BBC, Status: Renewal Possible): Disney did not renew its partnership with the BBC on this show after the second season with Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, and while there has not been an official renewal announcement, director of BBC drama Lindsay Salt has indicated that plans are still moving forward for this one. She has suggested that they could look to HBO to partner on the series as they are working with that premium cable channel on other projects, and if that does not work out, they will consider other options for Doctor Who:
There are different ways of setting up a show. We just need to make sure we do it in the right way and make sure we take the right time to do it. Ultimately it’s one of the BBC’s most treasured brands, so it’s not going anywhere.
A Christmas special is set for later this year that will presumably resolve the cliffhanger from the prior season, and whether HBO will come onboard with the show will likely depend on who purchases Warner Bros. Discovery.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO, Status: Renewed): We still have not seen the Nielsen Streaming Rankings numbers for this show (they run on about a month delay), but the early stats continue to look promising. According to HBO, the fifth episode–which delivered the big battle from the Trial of Seven–pulled in 9.2 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max (including encore runs) across its first three episodes. The show continues to perform well overall, counting as the biggest launch for an original on HBO Max thus far. It has already been renewed for a second season and will likely continue beyond that. You can read my review of the series at this link.
Star Wars: Visions (Disney+, Status: Renewal Possible): The third season of this Star Wars animated anthology premiered in October 2025, but it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and there is still no word on a fourth season. This show has received a fair amount of acclaim, though, and it has pulled in some awards, so I am thinking Disney+ will want to keep it around for another season or so. As an animated entry without recurring characters, it does not have to follow a regular schedule. And it has been about one and half to two years between seasons so far, so it could return sometime around 2027, possibly without much advance announcement.
Starfleet Academy (Parmount+, Status: Renewed): This Nu Trek entry did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its second week, and even though it was renewed in advance for a second season, there are rumors that will be it for the show. Filming has already begun on the second year, so that will still go forward, but there are rumblings that Paramount+ is looking to shake things up with the franchise going forward.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:
I realized that I had not adjusted the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season for some of the recent schedule announcements, so I now have those factored into the numbers. Season 2 of One Piece will have its premiere on Netflix on March 10th, and that one has already been renewed for a third year. Shows that have joined the schedule for the back half of the season that are ending include Outlander (Season 8 premieres March 6th), The Boys (Season 5 premieres April 8th), and Good Omens (the series finale streams May 13th). All four of those are now included in the score which brings us to 21 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (49% of shows tracked) vs. 10 cancelled and ending (23%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
| Show Count | 43 | ||
| Cancelled | 2 | 4.7% | |
| Ending | 8 | 18.6% | 23.3% |
| Renewed | 21 | 48.8% | |
| On the Bubble | 0 | 0.0% | |
| Renewal Possible | 12 | 27.9% | |
| Mini-Series | 3 |
