Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
Pluribus (Apple TV, Status: Renewed): It took a few weeks for this Apple TV entry to make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, but it has been a steady performer since then. The show remained in the Top 10 the week after its season finale, slipping to Number 9 and pulling in an estimated 381 million minutes of viewing. It has already been renewed for a second season, and could stick around beyond that.
The Copenhagen Test (Peacock, Status: Renewal Possible): This spy fi entry slipped into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings the week after its premiere at the Number 10 slot with an estimated 371 million minutes of viewing. That is actually decent for a Peacock original and could have this one on the way to a second season renewal. You can read my review of the series at this link.
The Beauty (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): This horror series set a record for FX with 190 million views for its trailer. However, the network has remained mum on the actual viewership of the show two weeks after it premiered. I do not currently have a reliable source for cable ratings, so I have not seen any numbers, but if the show had a strong premiere, FX certainly would have been highlighting the accomplishment. They may be waiting to see how the digital viewing goes, so we will see what those numbers reveal once they are available.
House of the Dragon (HBO, Status: Renewed): The fourth season of this Game of Thrones spin-off was previously announced as its last, but there were talks that the show might continue beyond that. However, HBO boss Casey Bloys has now confirmed it will wrap up with its fourth year. He claims that “there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens,” and that will be reached by the time the show reaches Season 4.
The Last of Us (HBO, Status: Renewed): Also potentially coming to an end is this HBO post-apocalyptic series. When asked whether its upcoming third season will be its last, Casey Bloys has this to say: “It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them”. Its viewership was down in its second season and this one is an expensive show to produce, so it may be wrapping up sooner rather than later.
