Sci Fi TV Highlights: Premieres for Wonder Man and School Spirits Season 3, a Blake’s 7 Reboot Is on the Way, and More

Sci Fi TV Highlights: Weekly post looking at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.  The dates and times shown below can change with little to no notice.

Sci Fi TV Premieres:

Wonder Man (Disney+): Aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams is struggling to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery, an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film “Wonder Man.” These two actors at opposite ends of their careers doggedly pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry. All episodes will be available on Tuesday.

School Spirits (Paramount+): Maddie Nears and her friends dive into a deeper, darker mystery as the veil between worlds grows dangerously thin, delivering twists that challenge everything they thought they knew. After clawing her way back to life, Maddie struggles with terrifying visions and the weight of protecting both the living and the dead while Simon – trapped in the afterlife – becomes obsessed with the secrets buried in Split River High’s scars. Why have so many people died at Split River High? What was Mr. Martin warning them about? As they search for answers, new dangers and dark secrets begin to surface. The first three eps of Season 3 will be available for streaming on Thursday.

Schedule Notes:

Wrapping up this week is Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tales which has its Season 2 finale on Thursday on AMC+ and Sundance NOW. There has been no word on a third season of that one yet.  Note that Wonder Man is considered a mini-series, and a second season of that one is not currently planned. Sci Fi TV News of Note:

A Blake's 7 reboot is currently in the works

In big news for sci fi fans, a reboot of the 1978 classic British series Blake’s 7 is in the works. Last of Us Director Peter Hoar has started up the production company Multitude Productions, and they have been buying up IPs, one of which is B7. They are targeting the reboot for the BBC, but will also look for co-funding, possibly from one of the American streaming services. There are no specifics at this point on how they will approach the property, but Hoar did compare it to the critically acclaimed Andor series “because of the integrity, wit, and sophistication”. The original Blake’s 7 followed a group of criminals turned rebels fighting against the tyrannical Terran Federation that controls much of the known galaxy. It ran for four seasons and was known for its dark themes and morally ambiguous characters as well as its low production values (you can read more about the show at this link). There have been several other attempts to reboot the show in the past, including one at Syfy, but those never got past the early production phase. Stay tuned for more details on this one.

Rachel Smythe’s award-winning web comic Lore Olympus will be getting an adaptation as an animated series on Amazon’s Prime Video. That retelling of the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades has been in the works from The Jim Henson Company and Webtoon Productions for a while, and Amazon has now given it the greenlight. It has not shown up in Production Weekly yet, so I assume that production has not officially begun yet, and likely this one will not premiere until sometime in 2027.

Speaking of Production Weekly, there have not been many genre shows appearing in that list lately which suggests a slowing of production. That goes along with the decline in the number of television shows we have been seeing the past few years, which I discuss in more length at this link.

In scheduling news, The Testaments, Hulu’s follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale, has received a premiere date of April 8th. The first three episodes will be available that day, with one per week releasing after that.
