Sci Fi TV Premieres:

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO): A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends. Premieres Sunday at 9 PM EST.

Starfleet Academy (Paramount+): This series introduces us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself. The first two episodes will be available on Thursday.

Sci Fi TV News of Note:

When will the Stranger Things finale be available for streaming?

Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer has claimed that they have no plans for a sequel series. Following are his comments from an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (which contain minor spoilers):

We really don’t know. I mean, Mike’s closing the basement door. We’re closing the door on the story. That’s one reason we had the closing credits the way we did, because it was a way of saying: “This is finite. This is the end of their story. It’s the end of the story of Mike and Eleven and Joyce [Winona Ryder] and Hopper.” So, no, there’s no plan or intention to tell the story because it’s a coming-of age story. Ultimately, that’s what it’s supposed to be. That’s what the show always was. When he closes the door to the basement, he’s closing the door on his childhood and he’s moving onto adulthood.

He went on to say that he would consider a sequel a “gross cash grab”. That said, an animated spin-off series is on the way this year, and other projects in the same universe are in the works, so this project will be pulling in some more cash.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 wrapped filming in December 2025, but it may still be a while before it has its premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video. Because the CGI for this show is so elaborate, it takes time to get all of the special effects completed. There was a fourteen-month gap between the completion of filming on the second season and the actual premiere. If Season 3 follows a similar timeline, it would be February 2027 before the show returns.

The television adaptation of the Stephen King short story “The Revelations of ‘Becka Paulson”, which has been in the works at The CW since 2020, has been cancelled.  That would have focused on Becka Paulson, who, after a nail gun incident, starts receiving messages from a jaded Jesus about helping to save the world.  With that network shifting more to reality programming, sports, and acquired shows under its new regime, there was not a desire to move forward with the project.

Netflix has given an eighth season renewal to its anthology series Black Mirror, but it appears that it has quietly cancelled its two animated entries Terminator: Zero and Leviathan. More on those two at this link.
