The Mighty Nein (Prime Video): NEW SERIES Premieres Wed Nov 19
Sci Fi TV News of Note:
Now that the merger between Skydance and Paramount is complete, plans are moving forward for a new Star Trek movie, but it will not be a continuation of the reboot that started in 2009. The J.J. Abrams-led series of films brought on a new cast to play Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, et al, and it set up an alternate continuity from the original series referred to as the Kelvin Timeline. The first film in the series–starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Karl Urban in the principal roles–was a Box Office hit, and the sequel Into the Darkness drew even larger audiences. But Star Trek: Beyond was a disappointment, and the reboot stalled at that point.
Current Paramount chief David Ellison recently addressed the status of the venerable franchise and had this to say:
The hope is to have a fresh Star Trek movie, though the studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.
There had been talks of bringing that cast back for a fourth movie as recently as this year, but those plans appear to have changed post-merger. There is no further information on how they plan to proceed with the Trek films at this point, but apparently the focus is on moving forward and not looking back at the J.J. Abrams reboot era.
The television series based on Mass Effect is moving forward at Amazon Studios, and executive producer Mike Gamble had the following to say in a recent blog post:
The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game. The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story – because after all … that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?
Mass Effect is a military science fiction game that takes place in a distant future when humans have moved out into the galaxy and come into conflict with alien civilizations. The first three games in the series focus on Commander Shepard. The Amazon series is only in pre-production at this point, and filming will not begin until some point in 2026.
In production news, work has begun on the sixth season of Apple TV’s For All Mankind even though it has not officially received a renewal yet. Work has also begun on Season 13 of American Horror Story, and you can read more about those two at this link.
