Sci Fi TV Highlights: Premiere for Pluribus, Disney Drops Doctor Who, and More

Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.  The dates and times shown below can change with little to no notice.

Sci Fi TV Premieres This Week:

Pluribus, November 7th, Apple TV+: Pluribus follows Carol Sturka, a best-selling historical romance author who calls her work “mindless crap.” But her world is upended when, in the middle of a promotional book tour, a mysterious virus spreads across New Mexico, transforming humanity into a mass of cheerful, content individuals. Unlike everyone else, Carol is somehow immune and trudges through this altered reality with a mix of rage and confusion. The first two episodes will be available on Friday, with one per week releasing after that.

Schedule Notes:

There are only five sci fi/fantasy shows releasing new episodes this week which is a low point for the year. A few more will join the schedule this month (more on that at this link), but expect the low output to continue through the end of the year. Below are the full listings for the current week, and you can see all of the premieres for November and beyond at this link. The two-week view of the schedule is available here.

Sci Fi TV News of Note:

According to Deadline, Disney’s deal with the BBC on Doctor Who has come to an end. The Mouse House jumped onboard with that show for the first season starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, with plans to franchise it similar to what they have done with the MCU and Star Wars. That was also at a time when the streamers were booming and before the post-Peak TV cuts started to take their toll. Viewership for the show dropped off during Gatwa’s two seasons, and it never made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its run on Disney+. The partnership also produced the mini-series The War on the Land and the Sea, and that will premiere early in 2026. But after that, Disney is out, though the BBC has not given up on the character yet. They have plans to continue the show and may look for another partner to help with funding the production.

Netflix has ordered an eight-episode Spanish-language limited series based on Philip K. Dick’s The Future Is Ours. Following is the official description for the series:

Year 2047. Ecological collapse has led to the creation of FedSur, a coalition of South American countries that applies extreme measures to protect nature and counteract the prevailing hunger and violence.

A new and captivating voice then emerges on the internet, a voice much more powerful than any other because it is capable of predicting the future. Police officer Hugo Crussí discovers that behind the voice is a young preacher named Jonás Flores, but his arrest causes him to become the spiritual leader of the continent overnight.

Forecasting the fall of FedSur and victory over climate change, Jonás will make the Latin American people dream and will get many to join his reactionary revolution. Meanwhile, Crussí, pursued as a member of the resistance, will embark on a suicidal mission to end the tyrant, who will have foreseen the assassination and will be waiting for him.

It will be produced by K&S Films (The Eternaut) and Electric Shepherd Productions (The Man in the High Castle), and Mateo Gil (Pedro Páramo, The Minions of Midas) will be onboard as showrunner. Expect the series to arrive late 2026 or early 2027.

The Patty Jenkins project Rogue Squadron appears to be taking off again. That was announced as a film several years back, which would follow a new generation of starfighters, but then it was put on hold as Disney started rethinking the Star Wars franchise. Now, there are rumors circulating that it is being revived as a TV series aimed at Disney+. Nothing has been officially announced at this point, and it is uncertain if Jenkins would be involved in the series, though she may be available since Wonder Woman 3 is not going forward. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

In production news, work has begun on Black Hole, based on the Charles Burns graphic novels, John Carpenter Presents, Something Is Killing the Children, and more. You can read about those in our latest Sci Fi TV Production Report post.

Ariana Grande has been cast in the upcoming thirteenth season of American Horror Story which will also feature series regulars Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman. Expect that one to be targeting a Fall 2026 premiere and this could be its final season.
