Peacemaker will not continue to Season 3 according to James Gunn

Cancellation Watch: Peacemaker Is Done for Now, X-Men 97 Will Continue to a Third Season, and More

Status Updates

Peacemaker (HBO Max, Status: Ending): This DC Universe entry has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its second season, and when James Gunn was asked in an interview with Deadline about whether he was planning a third year of the show, he said:

No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be. I don’t want to never say never, but right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.

The second season did end on quite a cliffhanger, but it appears that will be resolved in one or more of the upcoming DC Universe movies (when asked whether it will be Supergirl or Man of Tomorrow, Gunn said “That’s a secret”). A third season of Peacemaker has not been completely ruled out, but it does not appear that Gunn will be turning his attention to that for quite a while since he is busy helming the DC reboot. For now, I am moving this one to ended status, though it is possible that the show could return somewhere down the line.

X-Men 97 (Disney+, Status: Renewed): Announced at NYCC this past weekend, this animated X-Men revival has been renewed for a third season ahead of its second season premiere. The first season premiered in March 2024 to much acclaim, and it performed well for the streaming service. Progress has been slow on the second year of the show, but it now has a release window of Summer 2026.  This is a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series from the 90s and is not part of the MCU.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy (Prime Video, Status: Cancelled): The second season of this animated sci fi comedy was released with very little promotion in May of this year (much like the first season), and there has been no word on it since. The show received a two-season order in advance, and it has not made it into the streaming charts nor has it generated much buzz. I can find nothing to suggest that a third season is in the works, so I am going to assume that Amazon has decided not to continue this series. Since it is an animated entry, there is always a possibility that it could return at some point. But for now, it appears to be done.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

Peacemaker counts for the 2025-26 season, so that will be adding one more show to the cancelled/ending column. X-Men 97 is not guaranteed to arrive this season (if it premieres in August that counts for the 2026-27 season), so I will not be counting it yet. Also, I had not factored in that Ghosts has already received the greenlight for a sixth season by CBS, so I am adding that one in the renewal column. The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy counts for last season.  That brings the current score to 5 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (30% of shows tracked) vs. 13 renewed (65%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 20
Cancelled 1 5.0%
Ending 5 25.0% 30.0%
Renewed 13 65.0%
On the Bubble 0 0.0%
Renewal Possible 1 5.0%
