Why Was SurrealEstate Cancelled and Can It Be Saved? (Updated)

SurrealEstate is a spooky, fun show that has yet to build up much of an audience because it received little in the way of support from Syfy.

What Is It?

This supernatural dramedy follows the Roman real estate agency that focuses on haunted or possessed houses in order to clear out their supernatural tenants before new buyers take up residence.

Aired: 2021-25, 3 Seasons Totaling 30 Episodes

Starring: Tim Rozon, Sarah Levy, Adam Korson, Maurice Dean Wint, Savannah Basley

Why Was It Cancelled?

This fun little series slipped onto Syfy’s schedule a few years back without much promotion and managed to stick around for three seasons against all odds. Syfy originally cancelled the show after its first season, but then reversed that decision and brought it back for a second and third year. It is produced in a partnership with the Canadian CTV Sci-Fi Channel, and that helped to keep it viable despite low ratings. During its third season, it averaged only a 0.02 score (two one-hundredths of a ratings point) based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 130K total viewers for its Syfy broadcasts, which were not good numbers even for basic cable. Of course, it didn’t help that Syfy relegated it to the Thursday 10 PM EST timeslot without much of a lead-in and that the network does very little to promote its own shows.

Syfy seems to be barely clinging to scripted originals these days, having only a few offerings like SurrealEstate and Revival on the schedule throughout the year. But the fact is that both of those shows are actually quite good and have started to develop a fan following (you can read my review of the former at this link and the latter at this link). If the network had paired those two up and given them more promotion, they might have found a wider audience than the small followings they have right now. And they are not expensive to produce compared to what the streaming services are paying for originals these days, so the network should give them the support they need so that it can continue with scripted programming on its schedule.

SurrealEstate wrapped up its third season back in June, and just recently, its cancellation was confirmed by series co-star Elena Juatco, though Syfy still has not made an official announcement on the show. It did resolve several of its storylines, but it also set up the continuation to a fourth season, and fans will be disappointed if it gets truncated at this point.  But the network appears to have moved on from this one as its lineup of scripted originals continues to diminish. (I discuss the renewal/cancellation prospects of Revival in more detail at this link.)

What Can Fans Do to Help the Show?

If fans want a fourth season of the show, the best thing they can do is watch it and get it trending on social media. All three seasons are currently streaming on Hulu, so you can watch it there and your views will be counted (no Nielsen filtering). In addition, fans should get the show trending on social media with hashtags like #SaveSurrealEstate and #SurrealEstateSeason4. That will bring more attention to the show and perhaps convince another venue to pick it up (or maybe Syfy will reverse its cancellation a second time). Perhaps Hulu will consider taking a flier on this one since they are streaming the first three seasons. It would be relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of streaming originals, and they could pick up the partnership with the CTV Sci Fi Channel in Canada to share the expenses.

SurrealEstate was a survivor across its three seasons, and perhaps it will find a way to live on to a fourth year. But I believe the fans will need to come together and show their support for that to happen. People are tuning into the show and want it to stick around, and there is a good chance it has found a bigger audience on Hulu. If they rally together, perhaps this one will continue to a fourth season and beyond.

Where Can You Watch It?

As mentioned above, all three seasons are currently streaming on Hulu. It may still be showing up on Syfy’s schedule in reruns from time to time, but it is no longer streaming on that network’s website.

  1. CONTAINS SPOILER!! YOU’VE BEEN WARNED. I was sad to see the last episode with Auggie dying and then I find out the actual show is also being killed off. Now I’m really sad! I really enjoyed the show. C’est la vie.

  2. This show really hooked me – it is great. Shame on SyFy for cancelling it. Amazon Prime, Hulu, please pick it up and renew it!! The cast is amazing and the writing spot on!

  4. Love this show. Please don’t cancel. It’s the only place to watch Tim after the cancellation of Wynona Earp. That was another great show that got canceled. Please Please don’t Cancel.

  5. So upset about the (again) cancellation of Surreal Estate. Good, intelligent shows like this one have a hard time staying around because the folks who enjoy it most are not (usually) those that make the most noise. The set up for season 4 and it’s subsequent cancellation are evidences of media’s fickle nature. Pandering to the broadest audience, while the usual way to stay in the network’s good graces, tends to be a death knell (pun intended) for intelligent, thought-provoking shows like Surreal Estate.

  6. I love Surrrealestate please we need a season 4 at least close off the series properly . It’s so hard when you love a series for it to end without a proper ending.

  7. Sci-fi used to have the best original shows Warehouse 13 being human bitten surreal estate is an excellent show revival not so sure about but you’re right you don’t promote then of enough and now you’re showing s*** same old f****** movies and the same old stupid shows I’m about to wipe you out of my DVR just to tell you how I feel keep surreal estate probably one of the best shows on TV but you keep f****** it up

  8. Surreal Estate is a great show,I have watched since day one and find it fun and quirky with a great cast and writing.Syfy don’t let this little gem go,I love your original programming.I was a huge fan of Haven and your other programs,Surreal Estate and we fans deserve another season

  9. I was a huge fan of Winona Earp and when I saw Tom Rozon had a new show; I jumped on it. Loved this show from the first episode and it hasnt fallen off one step. Im hoping fir a fourth season. It is the only new show I watch.

  10. I love this show ! We need more of this fabulously written show ! The character’s are great ! Every episode has you wanting more ! Especially now with Augie at the bar with Luke turning his head around to see …. Please don’t leave us hanging

  11. Why is that, when we have a real and good serial, networks don’t give them the credit they should deserve. Anyway it not only deserved a 4th but many more seasons as this subject of the afterlife is very well written and exposed in this unique show. Thank you all that worked on it and to those who cancelled it, only shows how small minded the people who administer the show business are. Well done Surrealestate team! You will be very much missed.

  12. An intelligently written show w an engaging cast. So much humor to go w intriguing and exciting plots that are not cliches. One wouldnt expect to see so much love and compassion in a show in the horror/suspense genre but it is welcome. It deserves a continued life, please keep the heartbeat going!

  13. Begging for Season 4! I rarely like a show so much that I would watch again, or tell people to watch. It had Connie Britton in the beginning I think, but nobody else I knew. It was unique, fun, entertaining, & interesting!

  14. My boyfriend and I found Surreal Estate on Hulu this year and just loved binging the shows, this past summer, the characters are entertaining and the story lines are enthralling and unpredictable…We just watched the last one of Season 3,and We want more…Please make more,Seasons 4,5,6… Love it and need more of it…Robin 71,and Candy 63…

  15. I like the show, but Megan sucks. He dates this woman for a few weeks before she dumps him like trash, he chases her like a sad puppy, she guilts him for not fighting for her after she ghosts him and dumps him, and suddenly they’re engaged? ?

  16. I really loved the show. Had only seen the 1st season. Stumbles across it on Hulu and caught the last 2 seasons over about 4 days. I told a couple of family members who also have a love for the weird and they have just started it. I do hope the renew it. It is such a great show and always has heart.

  17. The premise for this show is so clever, with writing and acting that are at least as good as(if not better than anything currently offered). And it never stoops to the kind of over-the-top-in-your-face-graphic sex and violence that has become so common. More, please!!

  18. My husband and I just found the show and binged watched all three seasons. We love it! Hoping for another season. Don’t stop now!

  19. I have really enjoyed the last 3 seasons of Surreal Estate. The acting is actually really good, you get into the storyline and look forward to every show. I cant run around much and love a variety of shows, this is unique, please keep it going!

  20. I have watched this Great show from the beginning and cried when they canceled it the first season!I watched over and over again even got my family into it as well as friends! So happy they did two more seasons, definitely agree that such is dropping the ball on this show!bigger fan base than they realize! Bring back!more episodes!😍😇

    1. I just finished the last episode of “Surreal Estate”, and I enjoyed it very much, the last episode left me hanging so please continue the series, it’s unique and keeps me wanting for more.

  21. I’ve been watching Surreal Estate for years but for some reason it’s the SyFy channel that doesn’t seem to be interested but the fans are interested. I was trying my best to watch it when 4th season came out but was unable to do it with SyFy then I tried Peacock b/c it was said it was on there and it wasn’t. So I had to disontinue Peacoc and SyFy trying to find it and I only saw it b/c I have Hulu and they finally placed it much later on Hulu. I don’t think the SyFy Channel wants it to do well b/c they don’t promote it well.

  22. I just found this show and it’s been on my to watch list for years… I need more. I noticed the gaps between seasons only towards the end of S3 and when I noticed S3 aired this year, I ws confident there’d be at least a S4 on its way. There are still so many avenues for the show to explore, especially following up on the Cabin Meeting about how some souls don’t need to move on and the others like Seven. It’s so rare to find original shows nowadays when networks just want to bleed a “success” til it’s long past dead (coughcoughSuperNaturalcoughcough). There are way too many good shows whose stories still have so much to give yet get canned because they didn’t do that well during its premiere (Kaos as one of the most recent victims) because we are in a streaming city now and our lists of to be watched are long. I won’t even consider starting a new show I’m interested in until the entirety of the first or current season has finishebeing released.

  23. I just found this show through Hulu TV. I’ve been binging it and am now on the last episode. PLEASE do a 4th season and a 5th and 6th. It’s a great show. They could have been on one of the networks along side “Ghosts”.
