Cancellation Watch: Wednesday Tops the Charts, Extant Finds New Life in Streaming, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Wednesday (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This supernatural dramedy topped the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for a third time in a row, pulling in an estimated 1.1 billion minutes of viewing for the week of August 18th. It also topped the Netflix chart as the second season pulled in 56 million hours of viewing across 7.2 million accounts for the week of September 15th. It has already been renewed for a third season and will likely stick around beyond that. In addition, an Uncle Fester spin-off series is in the works.

Extant (Netflix/Paramount+, Status: Cancelled): This ten-year-old sci fi series became available on Netflix last month (it was already streaming on Paramount+), and for some reason, it attracted a notable audience. Starring Halle Berry as an astronaut who returns from a solo mission in space to find that she is pregnant, the show ran for two seasons on CBS before getting cancelled. I don’t know what spurred the interest and whether that could lead to a revival of some sort, but if fans were to come together and make some noise, perhaps something could happen with this one.

Alien: Earth (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): This show slipped in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its second week, dropping to the Number 9 slot with an estimated 337 million minutes viewed. Its linear ratings also dropped as it pulled a 0.08 score with 385K total viewers for its penultimate episode. Overall it is still performing well, though, and I expect a renewal announcement soon.

Peacemaker (HBO Max, Status: Renewal Possible): The second season of this DCU series did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its premiere week. It did not seem to receive a lot of promotion, and perhaps it will show up in the next week or two. I don’t consider it in danger at this point, but we will have to see how it tracks in the coming weeks.
